OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University upended Wayland Baptist (Texas) 4-1 and 2-1 on Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
The Stars, ranked 21st in the NAIA, reached the SAC Tournament championship game 1 p.m. Monday against 11th-ranked Science & Arts in Chickasha, Okla. OCU (33-16) will strive for its 13th SAC Tournament title.
Cross Factor propelled Oklahoma City in the first game Sunday by driving in the first run of the day on an RBI double and added a solo home run. In the second game, Cade Stephens and Dalton Reed hit home runs to fuel the Stars.
In the first inning of the early game, Factor belted a run-scoring double to left-center field. Wayland Baptist evened the score on Marco Rivera's RBI double in the fourth.
Factor led off the sixth inning by crushing a homer over the right-field wall for the go-ahead run for the Stars.
OCU tacked on a pair of ninth-inning runs. Jared Hazeldine scored on a balk, and Peyton Crispin reached home plate on a ground ball.
Jacob Wright came through with his first career complete-game effort. Wright, a senior left-hander from Cass City, Mich., limited Wayland Baptist to five hits and a walk. Wright (2-2) struck out nine, including striking out the side in the first. Wright registered the Stars' first nine-inning complete game since Bryce Milligan on March 7, 2019 against Science & Arts in Chickasha, Okla., while compiling 123 pitches.
Crispin, a senior from Lookeba, Okla., finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double, while Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Bryson Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., added a 2-for-4 showing.
In the second contest, Reed provided the winning run by leading off the seventh with a homer beyond the right-field wall. Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., has hit 23 homers this year.
Stephens staked Oklahoma City to a 1-0 advantage in the fifth. Stephens crushed a solo blast over the right-field wall leading off the inning.
Wayland Baptist cut into OCU's lead when Rivera homered in the ninth.
Tyler Polk delivered another nine-inning complete game. Polk, a redshirt freshman right-hander from Duncan, Okla., held Wayland Baptist to five hits and a walk while fanning five. Polk (3-2) picked Tristan Galbreath off first base in the second. Polk piled up 118 pitches.
