OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell short 3-1 to Science & Arts on Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference softball tournament championship.
The Drovers, ranked third in the NAIA, took their second SAC Tournament crown and first since 2015, halting OCU's string of three league tournament titles in a row. The No. 2-ranked Stars went to 43-4.
Science & Arts used Randa Hatter's RBI base hit in the fifth inning to build a 3-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jaden Shores drove in a run with a single that went along the left-field foul line.
Emily Cerny limited OCU to a run on eight hits while striking out seven. Cerny escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. She struck out seven.
Kaitlyn Jones singled in the fifth to get aboard the possible tying run for the Stars, but Cerny kept OCU off the scoreboard.
Kennedy Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Shores, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., had a 2-for-4 day with an RBI.
Science & Arts dealt Christie Betker her first loss of the year as she went to 22-1 on the season. Betker suffered her first loss since Feb. 22, 2020. Betker went 26-0 since that setback against Central Methodist (Mo.).
The Stars host an NAIA Championship Opening Round on May 17-19 at Ann Lacy Stadium. The NAIA will reveal the tournament field 4 p.m. Tuesday on its Facebook page.
Oklahoma City owns 19 SAC Tournament championships and appearances in the last four SAC Tournament title matchups.
