OCU absorbs 3-1 loss to Ottawa

No. 2-ranked Stars set to take on No. 25 Midland at 11 a.m. Tuesday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University notched a 2-0 victory over Dickinson State (N.D.) before falling to Ottawa (Kan.) 3-1 on Monday at Ann Lacy Stadium in the NAIA Softball Championship Opening Round Oklahoma City Bracket.
The second-ranked Stars (44-5) face 25th-ranked Midland (Neb.) at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament winner advances to the NAIA Softball World Series.
Ottawa, ranked 20th, ran its winning streak to 22 games. Casson Rasmussen held OCU to a run on four hits while striking out seven.
The Stars scored in the top of the seventh inning on Amy Crabaugh's RBI base hit through the middle of the infield. Baileigh Loux led off the inning with an infield single, then scored on Crabaugh's hit.
Ottawa built a 3-0 lead in the third. Sammi Bates reached home plate on Allison Kearney's bunt popup to put Ottawa ahead by three runs.
Loux, a senior from Reno, Nev., went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Crabaugh, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Nicole Robinson turned in a 1-for-2 outing.
Shelbey Cornelson, a sophomore from Tuttle, Okla., struck out six in six innings. Cornelson (13-2) took her first loss since March 6, having gone 11-0 in that span.
Against Dickinson State, Sarah Fisher pounded a solo blast over the left-field wall for a 1-0 OCU edge in the first inning.
The Stars went ahead 2-0 when Brooklyn Mason came home on an error after Mallory McCoy reached base on an infield hit in the second.
Dickinson State managed to move one runner to third base against Christie Betker. Betker, a senior from Reno, Nev., fanned five and allowed four hits and two walks. Betker (23-1) scooped up her 13th shutout of the year.
Fisher, a senior from Vista, Calif., turned in a 3-for-3 performance, and Kaitlyn Jones, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., was 2-for-3. Mason, a junior from Lone Grove, Okla., went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
