OCU holds onto 17-14 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God

21st-ranked Stars face Wayland Baptist at 2 p.m. Sunday in SAC Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rallied past Southwestern Assemblies of God 17-14 on Saturday night at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
OCU (31-16) fell to Wayland Baptist (Texas) 14-12 earlier Saturday. The Stars, ranked 21st in the NAIA, takes on Wayland Baptist at 2 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Oklahoma City will look to knock off Wayland Baptist twice to reach the SAC Tournament title game. If the Stars take the early game, there would be a second game 6 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Bryson Lierle pounded three home runs against Wayland Baptist, while John Anthon crushed three homers in the late game Saturday. Lierle became the first Star to hit three homers in a game since Tyler Williams hammered four homers against Mid-America Christian on May 5, 2019 in the SAC Tournament.
OCU launched 10 homers Saturday. Dalton Reed nailed three homers on the day, and Peyton Crispin added a homer.
In the nightcap, Cross Factor belted a seventh-inning RBI double deep to left-center field, and Reed smacked a run-scoring single to right to make the difference. Noah Barks lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Stars ahead 17-11 in the eighth.  
Lierle took the mound to snuff out a Southwestern Assemblies of God rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lierle got the final two outs with Cross Factor making the final catch in right-center field with the potential tying run at the plate and winning run on deck.
The Stars erased an 8-7 deficit with six runs in the fifth. Crispin nailed a solo shot over the center-field wall, and Anthon made it back-to-back homers with a solo blast beyond the left-field wall. Factor drove in two runs with triple along the right-field foul line, while Reed bashed a two-run homer to center.
Anthon blasted a three-run homer to left to give the Stars a 6-2 third-inning advantage. Anthon, a senior from Dublin, Calif., put OCU on top 14-8 with a homer to right in the sixth. Anthon finished 4-for-5, scored three times and knocked in five runs.
Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., posted a 4-for-6 outing with two runs scored and three runs driven in, while Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Reed provided OCU with a homer in the first. Reed has hit 22 homers on the year and four in the tournament.
Tanner Sparks collected the win. Sparks, a senior right-hander from Shawnee, Okla., moved to 6-2 on the year. Sparks struck out four in 3.2 innings.
Against Wayland Baptist, Reed smashed a three-run shot to left with Lierle adding a solo blast to trigger OCU's seven-run first inning. Fredric Walter had an RBI single to extend the Stars' margin to 8-0 in the second.
Lierle powered a two-run shot over the center-field wall to increase OCU's lead to 11-5 in the fifth. After Wayland Baptist tied the game 11-11 in the eighth, Lierle struck for a homer beyond the center-field wall in the bottom of the inning to move the Stars back in front.
In the ninth, Gregory Ozuna hit a two-run homer to put Wayland Baptist on top 13-12. Carlos Collazo also homered in the ninth.
Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., rang up a 4-for-4 performance with four runs scored and four runs driven in, while Barks, a junior from Mustang, Okla., went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Reed knocked in four runs with a 2-for-5 showing and two runs scored. Lierle has five homers in the tournament.
