OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University powered its way past Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 20-9 on Friday at Jim Wade Stadium in the Sooner Athletic Conference baseball tournament.
The Stars, ranked 21st in the NAIA, pounded seven home runs – five during a 10-run fifth-inning outburst. Oklahoma City (30-15) meets Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium in the SAC Tournament.
Bryson Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., hit two homers in the fifth. Lierle led off the fifth by crushing a solo blast over the left-field wall. Cade Stephens made it back-to-back homers with a shot beyond the center-field wall. John Anthon smacked an RBI base hit to left.
Hunter Hughes belted his first career homer, a three-run blast to left. Cross Factor launched a two-run homer beyond the center-field wall. Lierle closed out the scoring in the inning by smacking a two-run shot to left. OCU built a 17-7 advantage after Southwestern Assemblies of God tied the game on a two-run triple by J.V. Verdin in the top of the fifth.
The Stars plated 20 runs for the third time this season and matched their season best with 10 runs in an inning.
Gunner Halter nailed a two-run homer to left as part of a three-run OCU inning in the second. Stephens reached home plate on a grounder to put the Stars ahead 7-1 in the third.
Dalton Reed hammered a three-run shot to center in the sixth for his 19th homer of the year. Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., drove in six runs while going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Lierle turned in a 3-for-5 day with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Noah Barks, a junior from Mustang, Okla., scored three runs and went 2-for-4. Stephens, a junior from Blanchard, Okla., went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Chris Bennefield notched his first win of the year by pitching 1.1 innings. Bennefield, a junior right-hander from Owasso, Okla., went to 1-1. Bennefield worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. Tanner Schoeninger started, while Grant Harrison pitched a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts.
