Stars gut out pair of wins

OCU scrapes up 4-3 victory over Loyola, blanks Ottawa 7-0

WESTWEGO, La. – Jared Hazeldine brought home Oklahoma City University's winning run on a 12th-inning single in a 4-3 victory over Loyola (La.) on Wednesday at Segnette Field in the NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round New Orleans Bracket.
Tanner Schoeninger fired a three-hit shutout to propel the Stars past Ottawa (Kan.) 7-0 also Wednesday. No. 20-ranked Oklahoma City (36-18) collides with 17th-ranked Keiser (Fla.) at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the tournament championship.
The Stars will look to reach the NAIA World Series with two wins over Keiser on Thursday. Keiser stands one victory away from the NAIA World Series on May 28-June 4 in Lewiston, Idaho. OCU owns 16 NAIA World Series appearances with the 2005 national crown. The Stars last advanced to the World Series in 2018.
Against Loyola, Noah Barks kept Oklahoma City in the game by laying out for the inning-ending catch in shallow right field with the bases full in the sixth inning. Ninth-ranked Loyola put together a 3-0 advantage earlier in the inning after Allen Dennis' home run and consecutive hit batsmen.
Dalton Reed ripped a two-run home run over the right-field wall to cut the Stars' deficit to 3-2 in the eighth. Reed went deep for the 24th time this year.
OCU tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth. Barks reached home plate by taking advantage of Allen's wild throw across the diamond from third base with two out.
In the 12th, Peyton Crispin had a two-out base hit, then scored from first base on Hazeldine's single that landed near the right-field foul line. The Stars improved to 3-1 in extra-inning games this year. OCU ousted Benedictine (Kan.) 4-3 in 13 innings Tuesday.
Cross Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., posted a 4-for-6 outing with a triple and a run scored, while Hazeldine, a junior from Norman, Okla., turned in a 2-for-3 performance with a run driven in, three walks and a stolen base.
John Anthon, a senior from Dublin, Calif., went 2-for-4, and Gunner Halter, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., was 2-for-5 for OCU.
Tanner Sparks snared the victory by shutting out Loyola over the last 6.1 innings. Sparks, a junior right-hander from Shawnee, Okla., fanned six while moving to 7-2 on the season. Jacob Wright, a senior lefty from Cass City, Mich., started and struck out three in 5.2 innings.
Against Ottawa, Schoeninger supplied with his first complete-game shutout in his longest outing in an OCU uniform. Schoeninger, a senior righty from Fort Collins, Colo., struck out seven in nine innings.
Schoeninger (7-3) retired the Braves in order in the first, third, sixth and the ninth, striking out the side to cinch the triumph. Schoeninger logged 106 pitches with 74 for strikes. Only one Ottawa runner reached third base vs. the Stars.
Oklahoma City plated six runs in the third. Factor belted an RBI double to right-center, and Bryson Lierle knocked in another run with a single through the left side of the infield. Fredric Walter hammered a grand slam over the left-field wall for his ninth homer of the season.
Factor added a run-scoring single in the seventh. Factor went 2-for-6 with two runs driven in against Ottawa.
Crispin, a senior from Lookeba, Okla., put together a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored, while Walter, a senior from Montigny, France, was 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBIs.
Anthon and Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., each went 2-for-4, while Halter was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
