Stars advance past Southwestern Assemblies of God

No. 21 OCU squares off with Texas Wesleyan at 1 p.m. in SAC Tournament title bout

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University eliminated Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) from the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament with a 25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 25-14 semifinal victory Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars (13-2) will match up with Texas Wesleyan in the SAC Tournament title tilt 1 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU, ranked 21st in the NAIA, made the conference tournament championship for the sixth consecutive year.
Oklahoma City seeks its fifth SAC Tournament crown in a row. The Stars face off with Texas Wesleyan in the league tournament final for the fourth consecutive time.
Sophia Salak posted her fourth 50-assist performance of the season and ninth such outing of her OCU career. Salak, a junior from McKinney, Texas, accumulated 50 assists, six digs and three aces. Lacy Beeler, a senior from Jenks, Okla., collected her second double-double this season with 16 kills, 17 digs and two blocks.
Ella Lofton, a senior from Cedar Park, Texas, turned in 12 kills, 11 digs and four blocks for her seventh double-double of 2020-21, while Isabel Harwell came up with 21 digs, the fourth time she has reached 20 digs this season for the Stars.
Catelyn Vargas, a sophomore from Lubbock, Texas, registered 12 kills and two blocks, and Caitlin Briggs, a senior from Mustang, Okla., rang up 16 digs for OCU. Olivia Nutter had a team-high five blocks.
OCU built a 16-8 first-set advantage with six points in a row. Harwell served up an ace, then Beeler and Kenady Bertling combined on a block to punctuate the Stars' run.
In the last set, the Stars reeled off a 7-0 onslaught for a 20-9 lead. Vargas keyed the run by knocking down two kills and teaming with Bertling on a block.
Oklahoma City and Texas Wesleyan clinched berths in the NAIA Championships. OCU secured its bid with its fifth SAC regular-season title in a row.
