Stars upend Science & Arts 7-2

OCU earns win in game 1 of matchup between top two teams in league

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University cruised to a 7-2 victory over Science & Arts on Friday at Bill Smith Ballpark in a showdown of ranked NAIA baseball squads.
Dalton Reed's two-run base hit gave Oklahoma City a 7-0 advantage in the fourth inning. The 21st-ranked Stars went to 29-13, 19-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and 11th-rated Science & Arts moved to 28-10, 18-4 in the SAC.
Oklahoma City went to 4-3 vs. ranked opponents in 2021 and snapped Science & Arts' eight-game winning streak.
Gunner Halter belted an RBI double near the right-field foul line as well in the fourth.
In the second, the Stars built a 2-0 lead when Reed scored on a ground ball off Cade Stephens' bat. Bryson Lierle advanced home on a wild pitch.
Cross Factor knocked in two runs on a base hit to left in the third.
Jake Patterson kept the Drovers scoreless through seven innings. Patterson, a senior left-hander from Ardmore, Okla., struck out nine in 7.2 innings. Patterson (9-2) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Braden Hill and Tyler Polk closed out the game for OCU.
Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., posted a 2-for-5 day with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, and Halter, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., went 2-for-5, doubled, scored twice and knocked in a run. Noah Barks, a junior from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-5.
OCU finishes its series vs. Science & Arts with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
