OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed over Science & Arts 6-5 in nine innings and 3-2 on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium in a matchup of teams ranked in the top five of NAIA softball.
Jaden Shores scored the winning run in the ninth as Amy Crabaugh laid down the squeeze bunt in the first game, while in the second game, Baileigh Loux knocked in the winning run on a two-run base hit. Second-ranked Oklahoma City (37-3, 30-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) clinched the SAC regular-season championship.
Christie Betker worked all nine innings to improve to 19-0. Betker, a senior from Reno, Nev., struck out four. Betker escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by fanning Darci Chester and retiring Amanda Moreno on a fly ball.
OCU took a 3-1 advantage in the second inning. Baileigh Loux reached home on an error after Shores bunted. Nicole Robinson put the Stars in front with an infield hit that scored two runs.
Sarah Fisher pounded a solo blast over the right-field wall for a 5-3 fifth-inning OCU lead. Kennedy Jackson scored in the third on an error.
Savannah Ashford smacked a two-run home run to tie the game 5-5 in the sixth. Chester and Randa Hatter also hit homers for third-ranked Science & Arts.
Robinson, a senior from Rochester, Ill., posted a 2-for-3 outing with two RBIs, and Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
In the next game, Loux singled to bring home two runs and put OCU ahead 3-1 in the sixth inning. In the first inning, Jackson reached home plate on a wild pitch.
Shelbey Cornelson fanned four in 6.1 innings to collect the win. Cornelson, a sophomore from Tuttle, Okla., went to 12-1.
Kaitlyn Jones, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Jackson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a steal.
The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain with one out in the seventh inning.
