OCU tops Morningside 3-1

Stars go 4-1 in Red Dirt Classic

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University prevailed 3-1 over Morningside (Iowa) in a clash of top 25-ranked teams in NAIA softball on Friday at Hall of Fame Stadium in the Red Dirt Classic.
OCU went 2-1 on Saturday and 4-1 in the Red Dirt Classic. The fourth-ranked ranked Stars moved to 6-1 this year.
Christie Betker struck out eight and allowed a run on five hits through six innings against 20th-ranked Morningside. Betker, a senior from Reno, Nev., improved to 3-0 in 2021.
In the third inning, Kennedy Jackson brought home Mallory McCoy on a bunt hit. OCU tacked on two more runs in the sixth when Kaitlyn Jones scored on a wild pitch. Brooklyn Mason nailed an RBI single to center field.
The Stars completed a two-game sweep of Lyon (Ark.) over the weekend with a 3-0 win. In the second, Nicole Robinson had an RBI single.
In the third, OCU went ahead 3-0 on Mallory McCoy's grounder.
Jaden Shores took the win, striking out four in 4.2 innings. Shores and Betker combined to shut out Lyon on two hits and two walks. Betker recorded the last out for a save.
Ottawa (Kan.) handed the Stars their first defeat of the season 1-0 on Saturday morning. Amber Flummerfelt and Casson Rasmussen combined on the shutout. Those two worked out of bases-loaded jams twice.
OCU makes its home debut this season in a 2 p.m. twin bill Tuesday against Concordia (Neb.) at Ann Lacy Stadium.
