OCU mauls Mid-America Christian 10-3

Stars plate 10 runs for third time in five games

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University started off Sooner Athletic Conference play on a winning note 10-3 over Mid-America Christian on Thursday at James Curtis Field.
Fredric Walter drove in four runs for the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 16th in NAIA baseball, moved to 8-6, 1-0 in the SAC.
Gunner Halter led off the game by crushing a home run beyond the right-field fence, while Walter pounded a homer to right leading off the third inning. Tanner Sparks struck out 10 for OCU.
OCU led 3-0 after one inning. Noah Barks reached home plate on an error, while Cade Stephens drew a bases-loaded walk.
Bryson Lierle nailed an RBI double deep to right-center field in the second. Stephens scored on a wild pitch in the third to give the Stars a 6-0 cushion.
In the sixth, Oklahoma City increased the lead to 10-2. Walter smacked a two-run double along the third-base foul line. Stephens drove in another run with a base hit to right-center.
Sparks, a junior right-hander from Shawnee, Okla., collected the victory. Sparks limited Mid-America Christian to six hits and a walk in eight innings. He struck out the side in the eighth. Grant Harrison, a sophomore righty from Jones, Okla., closed out the game on the mound. Harrison finished the game by striking out Julian Fernandez on a called third strike.
Walter, a senior from Montigny, France, had a 2-for-5 day, while Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Stephens, a junior from Blanchard, Okla., turned in a 2-for-4 line with two runs knocked in, and Barks, a junior from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
The Stars close their series against Mid-America Christian with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
