Stars sweep Mid-America Christian 11-2, 4-1

Reed swats three homers Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University wrapped up the sweep in its first Sooner Athletic Conference baseball series of the year by taking both ends of a doubleheader against Mid-America Christian 11-2 and 4-1 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Dalton Reed powered the Stars by pounding three home runs Saturday. Oklahoma City, ranked 16th in the NAIA, improved to 10-6, 3-0 in the SAC.
In the first game, Reed hit two home runs for the second time this season. Reed crushed a two-run homer beyond the center-field wall to put OCU ahead 3-0 in the third inning. Reed nailed a two-run shot to left field to give the Stars a 11-0 fifth-inning advantage and cap a six-run inning.
Bryson Lierle knocked in OCU's first run of the day on a sacrifice fly to left-center field in the first inning. The Stars took advantage of three errors to score two runs and extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth.
In the fifth, Dylan Taylor, Gunner Halter and Cross Factor had RBI base hits. Noah Barks drove in a run on a ground ball to second base.
Tanner Schoeninger benefited from the run support to collect the victory. Schoeninger, a senior right-hander from Fort Collins, Colo., posted his first complete game as a Star. Schoeninger (2-2) struck out nine and allowed one earned run while logging 116 pitches thrown.
Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., drove in four runs while going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs, while Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for OCU. Halter, a senior from Overland Park, Mo., had a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored and a run knocked in.
In the second contest, Jake Patterson reached double figures in strikeouts for the second time in his OCU career. Patterson fanned 10 while allowing one run on three hits and two walks. Patterson struck out the first six batters he faced and struck out the side again in the fifth. Patterson, a senior lefty from Ardmore, Okla., moved to 3-1.
In the seventh inning, Cameron Matherly of Mid-America Christian reached on a leadoff walk. Tyler Polk relieved Patterson, and the Evangels had two runners on and the tying run at bat. Polk, a redshirt freshman from Duncan, Okla., induced a fly out, then struck out the final two batters to earn his third save of the year.
In the fifth, Halter and Barks hammered back-to-back homers. Barks, a junior from Mustang, Okla., hit his first career homer. Reed added his third homer of the day in the inning to put OCU ahead 4-0.
Reed provided the Stars with a 1-0 lead in the first on a double off the left-center field wall. Reed finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Halter went 2-for-3, scored a run and drove in a run.
The Stars face Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Bartlesville, Okla.
