OCU upends USAO 4-2

Stars split doubleheader at USAO in clash of top five-ranked teams in NAIA softball

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University took down USAO 4-2 in the first game of a twin bill Wednesday at Bill Smith Ballpark where both teams were ranked among the top five in NAIA softball.
Third-ranked USAO took the second part of the doubleheader 5-4 in eight innings. No. 4-rated Oklahoma City went to 15-3, 8-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
In the first game, Baileigh Loux pounded an RBI double into deep left field in the third inning. Brooklyn Mason smacked a run-scoring single into right-center field to plate another run. OCU led 3-0 in the third.
In the fifth, Sarah Fisher led off by reaching on a hit by pitch. Fisher scored on Mason's ground ball.  
Mason reached home plate with OCU's first run in the second. Mason got on base with an infield hit, then scored on a USAO error.
Mason, a junior from Lone Grove, Okla., posted a 2-for-4 outing with two RBIs and a run scored, while Fisher, a senior from Vista, Calif., was 1-for-2 and scored a run. Loux, a senior from Reno, Nev., went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Christie Betker kept USAO scoreless until Randa Hatter hit a two-run home run in the seventh. Betker struck out 11 while allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Betker, a senior from Reno, Nev., turned in her seventh complete game of the year.
Betker retired the Drovers in order in the second, third, fourth and sixth. Betker struck out the side in the third. Outside of Hatter's homer, one runner reached scoring position against Betker.
In the nightcap, Amanda Moreno had the winning hit to left-center field with the bases loaded with one out in the eighth inning.
Jaden Shores belted a solo home run beyond the left-field wall to put the Stars ahead 4-3 in the sixth.
OCU took a 3-2 edge with three runs in the third. Fisher put Oklahoma City on the scoreboard by launching a sacrifice fly deep to left. Loux nailed a run-scoring double deep to left-center. Shores smacked an RBI single through the middle of the infield.
USAO tied the game 4-4 as Moreno poked an RBI single to left in the sixth.
Nicole Robinson, a senior from Rochester, Ill., went 2-for-3 and scored a run, and Shores, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., had a 2-for-4 outing with a run scored, a stolen base and two runs driven in. Kennedy Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., added a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored and a steal.
Lexi Duff pitched the final 4.1 innings and took the loss. Emily Cerny took decisions in both ends of the doubleheader for USAO.
The Stars take on Southwestern Christian in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
