Stars take two from Texas Wesleyan

OCU cruises 11-4, 5-0 on Tuesday

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Texas Wesleyan 11-4 and 5-0 on Tuesday at Sycamore Park.
Baileigh Loux, Mallory McCoy and Nicole Robinson each drove in a pair of runs in the first game. In the second game, Lexi Duff hit a three-run home run for the Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA softball.
Robinson nailed a two-run base hit to left-center field to break a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning.
McCoy pushed OCU's run total into double figures by pounding a two-run double to center in the seventh.
Robinson scored the Stars' first run of 2021 on a passed ball in the third inning. Loux put OCU ahead 2-0 with a sacrifice bunt to bring in another run in the third. In the sixth, Loux had an RBI infield single.
Jackson, a senior from Moore, Okla., posted a 3-for-5 showing with two runs scored and a run driven in, while Duff, a junior from Lone Grove, Okla., went 2-for-4 and scored twice.
Christie Betker earned the victory. Betker, a senior from Reno, Nev., struck out 11 while pitching all seven innings. She gave up two earned runs.
In the second game, OCU plated four runs in the fifth. Jaden Shores put the Stars ahead 1-0 with an RBI single through the middle of the infield. Duff crushed her first career collegiate home run over the center-field fence to move OCU's lead to 4-0. Shores added an RBI base hit in the seventh.
Shelbey Cornelson became the winning pitcher. Cornelson, a sophomore from Tuttle, Okla., shut down Texas Wesleyan on one hit and one walk. Allie Prewitt broke up the no-hitter with two out in the third.
After Mercedes Beltran drew a walk to lead off the fourth, Cornelson retired Texas Wesleyan in order the rest of the way. Cornelson struck out the side in the sixth. Cornelson fanned eight while notching her first career shutout.
Duff had a 3-for-4 outing with a run scored and three RBIs, and Shores, a senior from Newcastle, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Loux, a senior from Reno, Nev., scored twice and went 2-for-4, while Kaitlyn Jones was 2-for-3. Jackson went 2-for-4.
The Stars are set to play in the Langston Red Dirt Classic on Friday and Saturday at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. OCU takes on Lyon (Ark.) at 10:45 a.m., then Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 12:15 p.m. Friday.
