GOODWELL, Okla. – Oklahoma City University cruised to a 5-2, 7-2 doubleheader sweep of Panhandle State on Tuesday at Aggie Field.
Shelbey Cornelson scooped up the win in the first game, while Lexi Duff provided her first complete-game outing as a Star in the second game. Oklahoma City, ranked fourth in NAIA softball, went to 12-2, 5-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Cornelson, a sophomore from Tuttle, Okla., reeled in the victory by hurling four scoreless innings to close out the game. Cornelson (3-1) struck out five while allowing two hits and a walk. Christie Betker pitched the first three innings.
In the third inning, OCU plated the first two runs of the day. Kennedy Jackson and Kaitlyn Jones performed a double steal to put them both in scoring position. The two of them scored on Baileigh Loux's sacrifice fly to right field.
The Stars answered with the go-ahead run after Panhandle State tied the game. In the fourth, Mallory McCoy knocked in the run on a base hit to shallow right field. Duff added a sacrifice fly to right in the fifth.
Jones, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., posted a 2-for-4 outing and scored twice, and Jaden Shores, a senior from Blanchard, Okla., went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
Duff, a junior from Lone Grove, Okla., fanned four and gave up one earned run on eight hits. Duff (2-1) escaped bases-loaded jams in the first and the sixth.
Oklahoma City took the early lead as Jackson stole second and reached third base on an error. Jackson scored on Loux's fly ball to right.
In the third, Nicole Robinson smacked a triple deep into left-center field. Jones brought her home on a flyout to left. Loux tacked on an RBI single, and Shores nailed a run-scoring double to deep left.
Loux added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, while McCoy had a sac fly in the seventh.
Brooklyn Mason, a junior from Lone Grove, Okla., turned in her first 4-for-4 performance with OCU, while Loux, a senior from Reno, Nev., was 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs. Shores went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs driven in, and Robinson, a senior from Rochester, Ill., recorded a 2-for-4 outing with two runs scored.
The Stars have rescheduled their game that was rained out last week against Southwestern Christian for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dolese Park in Oklahoma City.
