Stars upend LSU-Shreveport 12-4

16th-rated OCU finshes series vs. sixth-ranked LSU-Shreveport at 2-2

SHREVEPORT, La. – Oklahoma City University pounded LSU-Shreveport 12-4 on Saturday at Pilot Field in a battle of ranked NAIA baseball teams.
The 16th-ranked Stars won in Game 2 of the twin bill Saturday after sixth-ranked LSU-Shreveport took the first game 9-8. Oklahoma City (12-9) split the four-game weekend series with LSU-Shreveport (7-5).
The Stars upended their highest ranked foe since taking a 4-2 win over fourth-ranked Tabor (Kan.) on Feb. 28, 2016 at Jim Wade Stadium. OCU took three wins in the four-game series against Tabor on Feb. 27-28, 2016. OCU owns a 3-3 record against top 25-rated competition this season.
In the second game, Bryson Lierle knocked in five runs and hit a home run, while Fredric Walter drove in four runs and homered. Connor Ferguson took his first win as a Star.
The Stars went ahead 5-1 with three runs in the third inning. Lierle nailed a two-run double into the right-center field gap, and Dalton Reed scored on Walter's squeeze bunt.
In the first, Gunner Halter stole home as Cross Factor and he executed a double steal. Walter put OCU up 2-0 with a run-scoring base hit into shallow left field. Walter hammered a two-run blast in the fifth.
In the sixth, Halter crushed a two-run shot. Lierle belted a three-run homer to close out the game's scoring.
Ferguson held LSU-Shreveport without a hit over the last three innings. Ferguson, a redshirt freshman from Boise, Idaho, struck out three. Tyler Polk, a redshirt freshman from Duncan, Okla., started and fanned three in four innings.
Halter recorded a 3-for-5 performance, scored two runs, doubled twice and drove in two runs. Walter, a senior from Montigny, France, was 2-for-3, and Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., produced a 2-for-4 game. Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the first game, OCU tied the game 7-7 on Walter's two-run single to left in the sixth. Jaylund Johnson had a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to make the difference.
Halter scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to close the Stars' deficit to 9-8. OCU put together a four-run inning in the fifth. Peyton Crispin doubled deep into left-center field to knock in a run, and Dylan Taylor smacked a two-run homer. Halter hit a solo shot to cut the LSU-Shreveport lead to 7-5.
Factor provided OCU the early lead with a first-inning sacrifice fly. Halter, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Tanner Schoeninger, Chris Bennefield and Grant Harrison pitched for the Stars.
OCU faces Sterling (Kan.) at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Jim Wade Stadium.
