OCU prevails 4-1 over LSU-Shreveport

16th-ranked Stars split doubleheader against sixth-ranked LSU-Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. – Oklahoma City University took the second part of the doubleheader 4-1 against LSU-Shreveport on Friday at Pilot Field in a clash of top 25-ranked NAIA baseball clubs.
Sixth-ranked LSU-Shreveport won 8-6 in the first game Friday. Oklahoma City, ranked 16th, moved to 11-8, while LSU-Shreveport is 6-4. OCU defeated its highest ranked foe since a 4-2 win over No. 4 Tabor (Kan.) on Feb. 28, 2016 at Jim Wade Stadium.
Jake Patterson shut out LSU-Shreveport through 6.1 innings. Patterson, a senior left-hander from Ardmore, Okla., struck out seven while holding the home team to one run on five hits and a walk.
Patterson (4-1) posted his first complete game of the year. He retired LSU-Shreveport in order in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings.
Bryson Lierle staked OCU to a 2-0 first-inning advantage. Lierle belted a two-out two-run single along the right-field foul line.
The Stars added to their lead in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Fredric Walter laid down a bunt to bring home Cross Factor from third base. Noah Barks reached home plate on a passed ball in the fourth.
Lierle, a senior from Altus, Okla., had a 3-for-4 game with two runs driven in, and Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
In the second game, the Stars built a 6-2 advantage through two innings. Gunner Halter led off by hammering a home run, and Dalton Reed crushed a homer to put OCU on top 2-0 in the first.
In the second inning, Barks nailed a two-run double to left field, while Factor smacked an RBI double. Reed added a run-scoring single with two out.
Josh Wunnenberg put LSU-Shreveport in front with a home run in the fourth.
Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., turned in a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs, and Halter, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a run driven in.
OCU continues its road swing through Shreveport, La., with a noon twin bill Saturday vs. LSU-Shreveport.
