Stars pound York 9-1

OCU splits with MidAmerica Nazarene, York

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University cruised to a 9-1 victory over York (Neb.) on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
OCU, ranked 16th in NAIA baseball, also fell to 25th-rated MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 9-1. The Stars moved to 2-2 after their opening weekend.
Tanner Sparks held York without a hit through five innings of work. Sparks and Kolin Marley carried a no-hitter until one out in the seventh inning.
Sparks, a junior right-hander from Shawnee, Okla., struck out seven in five hitless innings to earn the victory. Sparks allowed a walk and a hit batsmen during his outing. Sparks retired York in order in the first, third and fifth and struck out the side in the fourth. Marley, a senior righty from Norman, Okla., pitched the final two innings.
Gunner Halter, a senior from Overland Park, Kan., went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI, and Dalton Reed, a senior from Roff, Okla., posted a 3-for-4 performance with two runs driven in and his first home run of the year. Cross Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., homered while going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a stolen base and two RBIs. John Anthon, a senior from Dublin, Calif., was 2-for-3.
In the fourth, Factor and Reed nailed back-to-back homers to right field. Frederic Walter knocked in a run with a single, and Anthon added a sacrifice fly to put OCU up 9-0.
The Stars took a 5-0 second-inning lead. Halter mashed an RBI double to deep center field, while Factor and Reed each drove in a run with a base hit.
In the second game Saturday, Noah Barks, Peyton Crispin, Factor and Halter each had hits for the Stars.
OCU is set to meet Bellevue (Neb.) at 10 a.m., then 10th-ranked Central Methodist (Mo.) at 3 p.m. Feb. 6 at Jim Wade Stadium.
