OCU downs MidAmerica Nazarene 6-1

Stars have 1-1 day

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University topped MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 6-1 in a matchup of ranked NAIA baseball teams Friday evening at Jim Wade Stadium.
The 16th-ranked Stars (1-1) bounced back for the win after falling in the season opener 9-7 to York (Neb.) on Friday afternoon.
Against 25th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene, Frederic Walter crushed a two-run home run beyond the left-field wall, while Tanner Schoeninger held the Pioneers scoreless over five innings.
OCU struck for five runs during the third inning. The Stars took advantage of three errors MidAmerica Nazarene committed in the inning. Walter nailed his two-run blast on a full-count offering.
Cross Factor added a sacrifice fly in bottom of the sixth to put OCU ahead 6-0. MidAmerica Nazarene broke up the shutout in the seventh when Adam Rellihan had an RBI single to right field. OCU clinched the win by turning a 5-4-3 double play.
Noah Barks and Gunner Halter tacked on doubles.
Schoeninger struck out four in five innings, limiting MidAmerica Nazarene to four hits and four walks. Schoeninger, a senior right-hander from Fort Collins, Colo., worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third. Chris Bennefield finished the last two innings on the mound.
The Stars mounted a seventh-inning rally that fell short against York. Halter smacked an RBI double into right-center field to touch off the OCU surge. Factor pounded a two-run double to deep right, and Dalton Reed swatted a run-scoring base hit to center. The Stars finished the game with the tying run at the plate.
OCU tied the score in the second. Walter drove in a run on a triple to the left-center field wall, then came home on an error. In the fourth, Walter knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Peyton Crispin, a senior from Lookeba, Okla., had a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored. Factor, a senior from Yukon, Okla., and Walter, a senior from Montigny, France, each knocked in two runs.
Oklahoma City meets York at 10 a.m., then MidAmerica Nazarene at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
