WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma City University nipped Central Christian (Kan.) 1-0 on Wednesday at Tommy Peckham Field.
Madison Kemp provided the only goal of the match for Oklahoma City. Billy Martin landed the win in his debut as the Stars' women's soccer coach.
Martin became the OCU head coach in March after six years as Rose State's head men's soccer coach. Martin spent 19 years as assistant at OCU to Brian Harvey, who retired after the 2019 season. Harvey started the OCU program.
"What a great result for the ladies," Martin said. "We probably deserved a few more goals, but this being their first competitive match in 11 months, you will take the win. They have worked so hard and been so dedicated, they deserved the result and will only improve as they play more games. I am so proud of the girls."
Kemp, a freshman from Moore, Okla., came through for OCU in her college debut. Kemp and Madi Caputo made an attack on the goal in the final minute. Caputo dished the ball to Kemp, who converted on the score with 52 seconds left in the first half.
The Stars' defense made the goal stand the remainder of the match. Josie Knox, a junior from Edmond, Okla., took the shutout in her first outing for OCU and snagged three saves.
OCU holds its season home opener 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Wayland Baptist (Texas) at Brian Harvey Field.
