Stars knock off Central Christian 2-1

OCU makes Martin's debut victorious

WICHITA, Kan. – Oklahoma City University took a 2-1 victory over Central Christian (Kan.) in Billy Martin's first match as OCU head men's soccer coach Wednesday at the Stryker Sports Complex.
The Stars' Wyatt Long scored in the 48th minute for the winning goal. Oklahoma City handed Martin his first victory as its coach.
Martin took over as the Oklahoma City coach in March following Brian Harvey's retirement. Martin previously had been the Rose State men's head coach as well as a longtime assistant to Harvey, who was hired as the coach when OCU began its program.
"I can't be more proud of the boys after 11 months without a competitive game, and starting the conference season with a win is a testament to their dedication and hard work," said Martin, who recorded his 75th career win as a college head coach. "The boys showed great spirit and deserved the result."
Long, a sophomore from Granite Falls, Wash., posted the goal using an assist from Alejandro Viera at the 47:02 mark to put the Stars ahead 2-0. Viera, a sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, collected a corner kick, curled the ball to the far post, and Long pounded the ball into the goal on a header.
OCU scored first in the 33rd minute. Gustavo Cardoso took the corner kick, then fired a shot that the Central Christian goalkeeper Sebastian Herrera rejected. The ball caromed off Herrera's hands, then Lucas de Freitas knocked the ball through for the goal.
Central Christian tacked on a late goal by Juan Adrian Lopez in the last minute.
Oklahoma City built a 19-4 advantage in shots, putting 12 shots on goal. The Stars made 14 shots in the first half. Danilo Vilani, a junior from Goiânia, Brazil, snared three saves for OCU.
The Stars return to Brian Harvey Field for a 3 p.m. contest Saturday against Wayland Baptist (Texas).
