Stars advance to SAC Tournament semifinals for 10th consecutive year

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University blistered Southwestern Christian 88-57 on Tuesday night at Abe Lemons Arena in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament quarterfinals.
Abby Selzer, a junior from Thomas, Okla., powered OCU (5-0) with 21 points. The Stars, ranked 14th in the NAIA, take on second-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 6 p.m. Friday in the tournament semifinals in Plainview, Texas.
Oklahoma City reached the SAC Tournament semifinals for the 10th year in a row. The Stars exceeded 85 points for the third time in 2020-21. OCU shot 49.2 percent from the field for the game and 53.5 percent from the floor from the second quarter on.
The Stars limited Southwestern Christian to 31.8 percent shooting from the field and 18.8 percent shooting from beyond the 3-point arc (6-for-32) on the night.
OCU built a 27-8 second-quarter advantage as the Eagles shot 4-for-18 from the field to start the game and missed their first nine 3-point tries. Southwestern Christian entered the game hitting 11.31 3-pointers per game and 39.3 percent from 3-point range as a team and ranking among the top five in both categories nationally.
"I'm proud of everyone's effort and energy tonight," OCU coach Brett Tahah said. "We're thankful for the games we have been able to play. We're thankful for the opportunity to keep playing and moving forward. We're blessed to be able to play. We'll take every game we can get. It's just good to see how much fun and joy on our faces when we played tonight."
Selzer grabbed five rebounds and shot 9-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. Paige Pendley, a sophomore from Elgin, Okla., produced her first double-double this season with 16 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
OCU's Erika Ankney, a junior from Harrah, Okla., turned in 11 points, three assists and two steals.
"It's been a dream come true," Tahah, a former OCU student-athlete, said of coaching the Stars. "I absolutely love every second of it. I love the girls. I love the administration. I love being able to come back. It was fun to play here, and it's more fun to coach here."
