OCU edges John Brown 61-59

Ankney's bucket with 53 seconds left lifts Stars

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Erika Ankney's layup in the final minute made the difference in Oklahoma City University's 61-59 victory over John Brown (Ark.) on Saturday at Bill George Arena.
Ankney drove the lane for a lay-in with 53 seconds left for the winning basket. The Stars, ranked 14th in NAIA women's basketball, completed the regular season 4-0, 3-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The SAC Tournament starts Tuesday with the quarterfinals. The tournament continues with semifinals Friday, Feb. 26 and concludes with the championship March 1. All games will be on campus sites. The pairings will be announced Sunday with the seeds determined by the league oversight committee.
Oklahoma City overcame a six-point fourth-quarter deficit. Taylor Fergen's foul shot moved the Golden Eagles' lead to 59-53 with 2:40 remaining.
OCU's Mallory Lockhart answered with back-to-back treys to tie the game. Lockhart sank a 3-pointer at the 2:22 mark, then nailed the tying 3 with 1:45 showing. Payton Taylor assisted Lockhart on each 3-pointer.
The Stars kept John Brown from hitting another field-goal try after Natalie Smith's layup put the home team ahead 58-52 with 3:50 to go. John Brown missed its final seven shots from the floor including six 3-point attempts. OCU limited the Golden Eagles to a 25.7 percent field-goal percentage for the lowest this season by a Stars opponent.
Paige Pendley knocked down three free throws to provide Oklahoma City a 41-31 advantage at the 5:59 mark of the third quarter for the Stars' largest lead of the day.
Lockhart, a junior from Keller, Texas, and Abby Selzer topped the Stars with 17 points each. Lockhart downed a season-high five 3-pointers in eight attempts from 3-point range. Selzer, a junior from Thomas, Okla., posted her third double-double this season with 14 rebounds and two blocked shots. Selzer shot 6-for-8 from the field.
Pendley, a sophomore from Elgin, Okla., added nine points, seven rebounds and two assists while hitting 5-for-6 from the foul line. Ankney's crucial bucket accounted for her only basket of the game.
