Stars Open Halo Classic With Win Over Our Lady of the Lake

SAN ANTONIO – Oklahoma City University defeated Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 72-67 in the opening round of the Halo Classic on Tuesday afternoon at Mabee Gymnasium on the OLLU campus.

Senior center Abby Selzer all but sealed the win for OCU (5-1) with an offensive rebound, lay-up and free throw with 29 seconds remaining in the game, pushing the Stars to a 70-65 lead. Selzer's put-back was scored after OCU's third straight offensive rebound after missed lay-ups by junior forward Fiona Wilson and senior guard Erika Ankney.

The first half was a back and forth before OCU took an eight-point lead a the 1:04 mark of the second quarter when Wilson grabbed a rebound in traffic off of her own missed shot and dished the ball to Ankney, who made a lay-up to push the Stars to a 30-22 lead.

After missing its first 13 3-points attempts in the first half, OLLU (2-7) made two treys in the final minute of the second quarter to cut OCU's halftime lead to 33-28.

OCU never trailed in the second half but OLLU tied the score 61-61 at the 3:20 mark of the fourth quarter and later two free throws by Natalia Trevino cut the Stars' lead to 67-65 with 43 seconds remaining in the game. Selzer answered that threat on the Stars' next possession to secure the win for OCU.

Selzer made 10 of 11 field goal attempts and nine of 13 free throw attempts to finish with a team-high 29 points to go along with her team-high 10 rebounds. Ankney contributed 21 points for the Stars.

Free throws were decisive in the win with OCU making 22 of 29 attempts and OLLU making 13 of 18 attempts.

OCU will close out play at the Halo Classic on Wednesday with its first-ever match-up against LSU-Alexandria. That contest is scheduled for a noon tip-off.
