McPHERSON, Kan. – Oklahoma City University remains undefeated after recording a 62-50 come-from-behind win over Central Christian (Kan.) in the Sooner Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday evening at the Dr. Jerry E. Alexander Arena.
OCU (4-0) fell behind early and trailed 15-9 after the first quarter and 28-24 at the half against the CCCK (1-6).
The Stars tied the score 34-34 at the 6:04 mark of the third quarter when senior guard Annilia Dawn connected on a short jumper after stealing an CCCK inbounds pass after a bucket by senior center Abby Selzer. OCU took its first lead of the game on its next possession when junior forward Fiona Wilson knocked down a 3-pointer to make the score 37-34.
Freshman guard Elaine Witt capped off OCU's strong third quarter with a mid-court steal and driving lay-up to give the Stars a 45-40 lead with seven seconds to go in the period.
OCU kept up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter and consecutive steals and layups within a 30-second span by Wilson pushed the Stars to a 56-43 lead with 5:20 remaining in the contest. The home team would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game.
Selzer notched her fourth double-double of the season, leading the Stars with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Wilson contributed 17 points and seven rebounds (along with senior guard Jordyn Eaton).
Junior guard Paige Pendley finished with a season-high 12 points and Dawn contributed a season-high four steals.
OCU out-shot (45.5 % to 36.4%) and out-rebounded (36-25) the Lady Tigers.
OCU returns to action on Saturday with its SAC home opener against Langston at Abe Lemons Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
