THE MATCHUP
• Oklahoma City University will play in its second tournament of the 2021-22 season this weekend when the Stars travel to Butte, Mont. to participate in the Montana Tech Fall Classic
• OCU will tip off tournament play against Carroll (Mont.) on Friday before facing host Montana Tech on Saturday evening
• Carroll College and Montana Tech are both members of the NAIA-affiliated Frontier Conference
• Carroll College defeated OCU 80-69 in the second round of the NAIA Division I Tournament in 2019 in the only previous meeting between the two programs
• Saturday's game will the first ever between OCU and Montana Tech
ABOUT THE STARS
• OCU (1-3) routed Champion Christian (Ark.) 93-75 last Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. Five Stars scored in double figures in that win with senior guard Rashaun Coleman leading the way with 22 points
• Also scoring in double-figures in the win over Tigers were Kori Guest (19 pts), Ryan Birt (13 pts) and Eric Amandio and Romario Spence (10 pts).
• Coleman leads the team with a 15.3 points per game scoring average
• Senior forward Romario Spence leads the Stars in rebounding (6.3 rpg) while ranking second in scoring (14.0 ppg)
• OCU leads the Sooner Athletic Conference and ranks 24th in the NAIA in defensive 3-point field goal percentage, with opponents making 24 of 101 treys (.238)
ABOUT THE FIGHTING SAINTS
• Carroll College, ranked 10th in the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Preseason Poll, is off to a 5-0 start this season
• Four of the wins have been by 16 points or more with the lone single-digit victory being a 77-74 win over Eastern Oregon
• Leading the offense for the Fighting Saints is the one-two punch of senior guard Shamrock Campbell (18.8 ppg) and senior forward Jovan Sljivancanin (18.4 ppg)
• Carroll College ranks eighth in the NAIA in free throws made per game (20.8) and 12th in 3-point field goal percentage with 33 of 73 treys made (45.2 percent)
• The Fighting Saints finished 20-8 for the 2020-21 campaign with the season ending with a 73-65 loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God in the quarterfinal round of the NAIA National Tournament
ABOUT THE OREDIGGERS
• Montana Tech is off to a 3-1 start this season
• The Orediggers have reeled off wins over SAGU American Indian College, Dickinson State (N.D.) and Walla Walla (Wash.) since dropping a 92-82 to Eastern Oregon in the season opener
• Montana Tech lost 78-51 in an exhibition game at the University of Houston on Nov. 6. Current UH head coach Kelvin Sampson's first head coaching gig was at Montana Tech (1981-84)
• Montana Tech ranks seventh in the NAIA in turnovers per game (8.3) and 29th in free throws made per game (17.3)
• The Orediggers finished 13-11 for the 2020-21 season. That campaign ended with a 67-62 loss to Carroll College in the Frontier Conference College Tournament
ABOUT THE COACHES
Mark Berokoff (1-3, first season with OCU)
• Mark Berokoff guided Randall to three national championships and a national runner-up finish in nine years as head coach of the Saints. Berokoff's record with Randall was 147-122. Randall regularly challenged SAC squads and defeated OCU twice during that time
• Berokoff coached five national player of the year honorees, 16 all-Americans, three national tournament outstanding player award winners and one scholar all-American with Randall. Berkoff was two-time national coach of the year
• Berokoff's coaching career includes experience on the high school, college and professional levels. His combined head-coaching record over 19 years in the college and prep ranks is 372-199
Kurt Paulson (78-25, fourth season with Carroll College)
• Carroll College finished 20-8 last season under Paulson's leadership with the season ending with a NAIA Tournament loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God
• Led Carroll to their first national championship appearance in school history in hist first season as head in 2018-19. Top-ranked Georgetown (Ken.) defeated the Saints 68-48 in that contest
• The Orediggers have finished 29-8, 24-9 and 20-8 in the first three seasons with Paulson as head coach.
Adam Hiatt (44-67, fifth season with Montana Tech)
• Hiatt has led Montana Tech to two straight winning seasons after the team finished with a losing record in his first two years at the helm.
• Led the Orediggers to a 18-12 record for the 2019-20 season and a 13-11 record last season
• Coached at Westminster (Utah) before becoming head coach at Montana Tech.
