OCU rallies past Our Lady of the Lake 78-71

Stars use third-quarter surge to pull off victory

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fended off Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 78-71 on Friday night at Abe Lemons Arena.

Fiona Wilson topped OCU with 18 points. The Stars took their season opener for the sixth year in a row.

Wilson, a junior from Greenland, Ark., collected eight rebounds and knocked down four 3-pointers in her Oklahoma City debut. Abby Selzer, a senior from Thomas, Okla., supplied OCU with 17 points, 13 rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Stars' Erika Ankney, a senior from Harrah, Okla., posted 14 points and five assists, and Annila Dawn, a senior from Amarillo, Texas, came off the bench to tally 14 points.

Oklahoma City sank 52.9 percent of its shots from the floor. The Stars fired in 8 of 12 field goals in the fourth quarter. OCU owned a 44-37 advantage in rebounding after Our Lady of the Lake held a 22-21 edge in that department at halftime. Our Lady of the Lake mustered 34.7 percent shooting from the field.

"One of our focuses was keeping them off the glass," OCU coach Brett Tahah said of the Stars' second-half effort. "I thought we did a little better job. Our focus was getting the ball to Abby when she was open. We were not the best passing in the first half. I felt like the second half it got a little better."

In the third quarter, Keviona Barber hit a trey to put Our Lady of the Lake up 39-38 midway through the period. OCU responded with a 12-0 run sparked by Dawn's 3. Elaine Witt capped the resurgence with a free throw with less than a minute left in the quarter.

Selena Driskill's layup increased the Stars' margin to a game-best 13 points at 65-52 with 4:52 remaining.

Oklahoma City meets Wiley (Texas) in a big Monday matchup at 5:30 p.m. in Marshall, Texas.
