Stars slip away from John Brown 75-74

Kisner reels in his first victory with OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Romario Spence's layup with two seconds remaining brought Oklahoma City University a 75-74 victory over John Brown (Ark.) on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars notched their first win of the season and gave Tim Kisner his first victory as OCU men's basketball coach. Oklahoma City went to 1-2, 1-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
On the winning play, OCU's Ryan Birt drove the lane and dished to Spence on the right block. Spence faced up to the basket and shot off the glass and into the basket with 2.2 seconds to go.
To secure the win, the Stars' Kealon Clayborne batted away the inbound pass into the lane from three quarters of the court away from the basket, forcing a desperation 3-point try by John Brown.
"I'm just really proud of our guys," Kisner said. "When you've only practiced for two weeks, it's not pretty. I told them before the game we just have to find a way to get it done – I don't know how that's going to be – and we found a way. They're continuing to fight and continuing to find a way. We just beat a really good basketball team."
Kisner came to OCU after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach with John Brown.
"I love a lot of guys in that locker room," Kisner said of John Brown. "I'm just happy for our kids. Our kids have been resilient. They have been up against a lot of things. They have been up against waiting and waiting. They finally got a chance."
OCU came off a 68-67 setback to Texas Wesleyan on Thursday. The Stars' games this season have been decided by a total of nine points.
"We lost a heartbreaker Thursday, and we came back today and battled," Kisner said. "Basketball is a funny thing. We ended up in the exact same situation we were in Thursday, and Romario Spence powered up and finished. I'm proud of him for coming back and getting that in."
Kori Guest, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., spearheaded OCU with 17 points and eight rebounds while nailing a team-best three 3-pointers. Birt, a senior from Plano, Texas, totaled 11 points and four rebounds, while Elie Ghomsi, a junior from Bafoussam, Cameroon, notched 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals for the Stars.
OCU's Rashaun Coleman, a senior from Houston, tallied 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals, and Clayborne, a senior from Cedar Hill, Texas, added nine points and two assists. Spence, a senior from Luton, England, chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
The Stars overcame an 11-point first-period deficit. OCU improved all its shooting percentages in the second half, hitting 54.2 percent from the field, 66.7 percent from 3-point land and 70.8 percent from the foul line in the second period. The Stars led for only 3:16 during the contest after John Brown controlled the lead for 34:12 of the game.
Oklahoma City meets Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Waxahachie, Texas.
