Stars rally past Texas Wesleyan 57-50

OCU moves to 3-0 this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pulled away from Texas Wesleyan 57-50 on Thursday evening at Abe Lemons Arena.
Abby Selzer, a junior from Thomas, Okla., ignited Oklahoma City with 17 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. The Stars, ranked fifth in NAIA women's basketball, improved to 3-0, 2-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Mallory Lockhart, a junior from Keller, Texas, generated 13 points, while Erika Ankney, a junior from Harrah, Okla., accumulated 12 points, three assists and three steals for OCU. Ankney had the best shooting night on the team by hitting 6 of her 8 shots from the field, and Lockhart sank all four of her free throws.
Oklahoma City built a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers. OCU pocketed eight steals as Texas Wesleyan gave away 18 turnovers.
The Stars overcame an eight-point first-quarter deficit. OCU scored the first nine points of the second period. Selzer had four points to fuel the rally. Jaelyn Knight had a bucket to put the Stars on top 14-13 with 6:17 showing in the second quarter.
OCU reeled off an 8-0 run in the second quarter as well to take the lead for good. Payton Taylor hit a 3, then Ankney scored off a fastbreak. Lockhart nailed a transition 3 to give Oklahoma City a 23-20 edge with 2:09 left in the first half.
Oklahoma City led by nine on a pair of occasions in the fourth quarter. Selzer sank a foul shot for a 53-44 advantage at the 1:54 mark, and Lockhart's free throw provided OCU with a 57-48 lead with 23 seconds remaining.
The Stars are slated to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas.
