Meyers paces Stars in Southern Plains Intercollegiate

OCU faces eight-shot deficit entering final round Tuesday

OKLAHOMA CITY – David Meyers from Oklahoma City University sat atop the leaderboard of the Southern Plains Intercollegiate men's golf tournament Monday at Gaillardia Country Club.
Meyers, a senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, produced an 11-under-par score. The Stars tied for second place through 36 holes.
Oklahoma City recorded a 294-289–583 on the par-72, 7,001-yard layout to tie with Southwestern Christian (288-295–583). Bellevue (Neb.) led the field with a 289-286–575. The Stars moved from third place after one round to a tie for second.
Meyers delivered a 64-69–133 and 12 birdies Monday. Meyers buried five birdies among his first seven holes on the way to a 31-33–64 in his first 18 holes. Meyers played bogey-free until his 33rd hole of the day on No. 15 to build a nine-shot advantage. Meyers seeks his sixth career victory and ninth consecutive top-five finish. He owns 23 career rounds shooting under 70.
OCU's Bosten Benn notched a 74-70–144 with four birdies to tie for third. Benn, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., made par through his first nine holes. Benn had two bogeys and a double bogey Monday.
The Stars' Mason Mikeska and Ben Thionnet tied for 23rd through two rounds. Mikeska, a junior from Waco, Texas, turned in a 79-74–153 with five birdies. Thionnet, a freshman from Edmond, Okla., carded a 77-76–153 while making three birdies.
Will Fore, a junior from Southlake, Texas, supplied OCU with a 79-83–162. Fore's lone birdie of the day came on the par-5, 556-yard sixth hole.
Robbie Sager led three Stars playing as individuals. Sager, a freshman from Carthage, Mo., put together a 78-73–151 and five birdies. Quinton Tews (79-80–159) and Carson Breckenridge (88-83–171) also competed individually.
The tournament picks up again 8 a.m. Tuesday. OCU tees off at the first hole at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.
