No. 5 Softball Runs Winning Streak to 11 with Sweep at Wichita Round Robin

Stars Finish Weekend Trip 5-0

WICHITA, Kan. - As the season enters its second month, the fifth-ranked Oklahoma City University softball team has found a rhythm, and the Stars are rolling. OCU played three games on the econd day at the Wichita Round Robin on Saturday, and they took all three games convincingly to run their current winning streak to 11 games.

OCU (18-3) started the day by blanking Mount Mercy University (Iowa) (7-4) 3-0, they dominated Tabor College (Kan.) (6-5) in the middle game of the day 14-3, and they dispatched with tournament host Friends University (Kan.) (5-13) 7-3 in their final game of the afternoon.

Sarah Fisher got OCU on the board right away in game one, tripling home Kennedy Jackson as the third batter of the game, and Fisher scored on a ground out from Baileigh Loux as OCU quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead. Fisher again drove in Jackson with a triple in the sixth to provide the only other scoring in the game.

That was plenty for Jaden Shores.

Shores (10-1) scatterd three hits and two walks in a complete game shutout performance, as she tossed seven innings and struck out six Mustangs. Madelyn Irwin (3-3) threw a complete game for Mount Mercy in the loss, and she was tagged for three runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Jackson had two singles and scored two runs, and Fisher had the two triples, a run scored and two RBIs. Kaitlyn Jones had the only other hit in the game for OCU - a single in the top of the third inning.

OCU's offense took center stage in the second game of the day.

The Stars rapped out 18 hits and plated 14 runs in only five innings at the plate, and they scored four runs in the second inning and eight in the third. Freshman Amy Crabaugh blasted her second home run of the weekend in the second inning to highlight that frame, and Loux launched a two-run blast in the third as a part of that inning as well.

Fisher, Crabaugh, and Nicole Robinson each had three RBIs in the game, Mallory McCoy was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Loux was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Jones, Fisher, Shores, Brooklyn Mason, and Robinson each also had multi-hit contests for OCU in the win over the Blue Jays.

In the circle, Christie Betker (6-2) picked up the win, tossing five innings and yielding three earned runs on four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. Sydney Schreffler (0-1) took the loss for Tabor, as she lasted only two and one-third frames, and she was touched up for 10 runs on nine hits. Schreffler did not walk or strikt out an OCU batter.

The day wrapped up with OCU battling the host Friends Falcons, and while it took the OCU offense some time to get rolling, when the Stars got things started they again scored runs in bunches.

Jones opened the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to break the scoreless deadlock, and Fisher followed with an RBI-double that scored Jones to give OCU the 2-0 lead. After Friends got a run back in the bottom of the frame, Crabaugh picked up her fourth RBI of the day on a successful squeeze bunt to restore the Stars' two run cushion, and in the seventh, OCU plated four runs, with McCoy driving home two with a double, and Robinson adding a run scoring base knock.

Shelbey Cornelson (2-0) went the distance for OCU in the circle. Cornelson gave up three earned runs on only two hits in the game, she issued two free passes, but she fanned 13 Falcon hitters in the game. Michelle Kroell (1-8) was saddled with the loss for Friends, as she gave up seven runs - only three of which were earned - in six and two-thirds innings. She walked three and whiffed nine.

Fisher, Mason, and McCoy all singled and doubled in the game, and Jackson and Robinson each had a pair of singles to their credit. Mason scored twice, and McCoy had two RBIs as well. Jackson, Loux, and Mason each added a stolen base in the game.

OCU will return home and resume Sooner Athletic Conference play on Friday, Mar. 13 when they welcome cross-town foe Mid-America Christian University (10-6, 3-1 SAC) to Ann Lacy Stadium. The double-header is scheduled for 2 p.m.
