PLAINVIEW, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University eased past Mid-America Christian 74-59 on Friday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament semifinals.
Oklahoma City, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I, reached 30 victories for the 14th time in program history. The Stars (30-1) advanced to the SAC Tournament championship game 1 p.m. Saturday against fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas).
Earlier this season, OCU posted its 21st 25-win season in 22 years and 22nd consecutive 20-win season. OCU has rolled to a 677-88 mark (.885 winning percentage) since 1998-99.
The Stars moved into the SAC Tournament title game for the 19th time and sixth year in a row. OCU owns 12 SAC Tournament crowns. Wayland Baptist prevailed over the Stars 68-62 for the 2019 SAC Tournament championship, the Flying Queens' third SAC Tournament title.
Oklahoma City and Wayland Baptist shared the SAC regular-season crown and split the season series with both teams winning at home in 2019-20.
Both the Stars and the Flying Queens have assured themselves of berths in the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament on March 18-24 in Billings, Mont. OCU will make its 23rd consecutive appearance and 26th overall trip to the NAIA Tournament. Wayland Baptist moves onto the national tournament for the seventh year in a row and 27th time.
OCU overcame a nine-point second-quarter deficit. The Stars outscored Mid-America Christian 14-3 in the final 5:52 of the first half. Abby Selzer contributed six of the Stars' points during that run. NaShyla Hammons canned a 3-pointer from the corner to put OCU on top 26-24 with 1:26 to go.
The Stars closed out the win by unleashing an 11-0 surge in the fourth quarter. Brennyn Seagler and Erika Ankney combined for back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to increase the OCU advantage to 66-50 with four minutes remaining. Selzer ignited the fourth-quarter romp with a pair of foul shots.
Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., stood front and center for the Stars with 21 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Selzer, the SAC player of the year, went 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line while recording her sixth double-double of the season.
Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Seagler nailed 4-for-7 from 3-point land and posted her fifth double-double of 2019-20 for OCU. Ankney, a sophomore from Harrah, Okla., provided the Stars with 13 points and two steals, and Hammons, a senior from Oklahoma City, amassed 11 points, nine rebounds and two assists.
Oklahoma City held an opponent to less than 35 percent shooting from the field as Mid-America Christian cobbled together a 33.9 percent field-goal percentage.
