OCU comes up short in SAC Tournament title game

Top-ranked Stars fall 68-57 to Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, Texas – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University suffered a 68-57 loss to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Saturday afternoon inside the Hutcherson Center in the Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament championship.
OCU reached the SAC Tournament title game for the sixth year in a row and 19th time overall. The Stars, top-ranked in NAIA Division I, moved to 30-2, while fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist improved to 31-2.
The Stars met Wayland Baptist for the conference tournament title for the fourth time in five years. Wayland Baptist took its second SAC Tournament crown in a row and fourth overall. OCU owns 12 SAC Tournament championships.
Oklahoma City assured itself of a bid in the NAIA Division I Championship Tournament after sharing the SAC regular-season title with Wayland Baptist. The Stars will make the national-tournament field for the 23rd year in a row and 26th time overall. The NAIA will unveil the tournament bracket 6 p.m. CDT Wednesday on its Facebook page.
Abby Selzer of the Stars made the conference tournament all-tournament team for the second year in a row. Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., produced 20 points and six rebounds in the title tilt to finish with 18.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.33 blocked shots a game during the tournament.
OCU's Brennyn Seagler collected all-tournament honors. Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, posted her second consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Seagler averaged 11.7 points, 10.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.00 steals per contest throughout the tournament. She tied for the tournament lead in assists per game.
NaShyla Hammons, a senior from Oklahoma City, supplied the Stars with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
OCU rallied from a 25-15 second-quarter deficit to lead 32-31 at halftime. Selzer scored six points as the Stars outscored the Flying Queens 17-6 over the last 7:30 of the first half. Hammons sank free throws just before the half to give the Stars the lead.
In the second half, Wayland Baptist went back on top with an 8-0 run. Payton Brown and Kambrey Blakey canned treys to put the Flying Queens ahead 42-35 with 6:41 to go in the third.
Selzer's transition bucket with 8:12 left cut OCU's deficit to 53-50, but Wayland Baptist answered with six unanswered points.
Brown turned in a most valuable player performance with 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists a game during the tournament. Blakey had 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in the championship. Wayland Baptist gave away only five turnovers, the lowest amount by an OCU opponent this season.
