Shores Throws Eighth Career No-Hitter as Softball Opens Wichita Round Robin 2-0

Pitching Dominates as OCU Blanks Avila, York

WICHITA, Kan. - To say Jaden Shores has had an outstanding career at OCU is an understatement, but on Friday she added to her already impressive resume.

Shores threw her eighth career no-hitter, her first since April 24, 2019, as OCU (15-3) ran their winning streak to seven games by shutting out Avila University (4-7) and York College (4-11) by scores of 5-0 and 11-0.

It did not take long for OCU to give Shores all the offense she needed against Avila. The Stars got on the board in the top of the first inning when Sarah Fisher singled to drive in Kennedy Jackson and give OCU a 1-0 lead. The Stars added three runs to their lead in the fifth, with one of those tallies scoring on a double off the bat of Shores, and Jackson drove in Mallory McCoy with a two base hit in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Shores was a bit shaky early, but as she settled in, she became dominant. She hit the first batter of the game, and she issued a pair of walks in the third, two of the final 15 hitters Shores faced reached base, as she stifled the Eagles to take the 5-0 win. While it was her seventh no-hitter, is is her first career no-hitter to cover the scheduled distance of seven innings.

Shores (9-1) walked three and fanned 10 in the game to earn the win, and the loss went to Avila's Madison McKinney (1-4). McKinney allowed five runs - only two of which were earned - on 10 hits and one walk in a complete game performance, and she fanned five.

Fisher was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Jackson doubled and singled in three at bats, and Shores had a single and a double in four at bats. Jackson scored twice and drove in a run, Shored had an RBI, and Fisher and Jackson had a pair of stolen bases.

Christie Betker took the ball in game two of the day, and she benefitted from early offense against York.

OCU got on the board in the top of the first when Kaitlyn Jones stole third and scored on an error as a part of a double steal with Fisher, and OCU led 1-0 before Betker and the Stars went to their positions defensively. Amy Crabaugh belted her first home run at OCU in the second, and the rout was on.

OCU scored three runs in the second, two in the third, and four in the fourth to break the game open. Jones had an RBI-double in the second, Shores and McCoy picked up RBI hits in the third, and in the fourth, Fisher, Baleigh Loux, Crabaugh, and McCoy all had RBIs. Lexi Duff added a run scoring knock in the fifth to cap the 11-run outburst.

Betker (4-2) allowed only one hit in the win, and she walked one and struck out six in the shutout win. Pearl Brumm (1-3) allowed four unearned runs on five hits in two innings of work, and she was hit with the loss for York.

Fisher and McCoy each had three hits including a double, and Jones and Loux also singled and doubled in the game. Jones scored three runs, Loux crossed the plate twice, Crabaugh had three RBIs, and McCoy drove in a pair. Jackson also scored two runs.

The Stars will play three games on Saturday at the Round Robin, OCU will start the day against the Mt. Mercy College (Iowa) Mustangs (7-3) at 10 a.m., they will battle the Tabor College (Kan.) Blue Jays (6-4) at Noon, and they will wrap up their tournament trip against the host Friends University (Kan.) Falcons (4-12 at 2 p.m.
