No. 10 Baseball Drops SAC Opener to No. 17 Texas Wesleyan

Williams Blasts 11th Homer, Stars' Comeback Falls Short

OKLAHOMA CITY - The 10th-ranked Oklahoma City University baseball team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play on Friday night at Jim Wade Stadium when they hosted the No. 17 Texas Wesleyan University Rams, The Stars led early, but a rough stretch in the middle of the game put the Stars in a position from which they were unable to recover.

OCU (12-8, 0-1 SAC) scored first, and though they tried to rally late in the game, Texas Wesleyan (16-9, 3-1 SAC)  was able to hold off the charge and claim the first game of the weekend series, 5-4.

After the first two batters of the first inning were retired, Tyler Williams reached on an error and OCU took advantage of the break. Dalton Reed followed with a single that moved Williams to third, and Noah Barks drove him in with a single to put OCU on top 1-0. Rams' starting pitcher Gabriel Sequeria was able to induce a line out from Peyton Crispin, though, to end the threat, and OCU settled for one run.

That lead lasted into the top of the fourth frame when Texas Wesleyan used their own two-out rally to plate two runs and take the 2-1 lead. The Rams added three runs on only one hit in the sixth inning to stretch their lead to 5-1, and that chased OCU starting pitcher Aaron McGeorge from the game.

OCU plated an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bryson Lierle drove home Frederic Walter to pull the Stars to within three, and in the bottom of the seventh, the Stars closed the gap to a single run when Williams lofted his 11th home run of the season to score Cross Factor and cut the Texas Wesleyan lead to 5-4.

OCU loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and the top of the lineup at the plate, but an inning ending double play squelched the threat, and the Stars di not threaten in the ninth as Texas Wesleyan held on to win 5-4.

Sequeria (5-0) allowed four runs - two earned - on eight hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts over seven innings to earn the win. McGeorge (3-1) took the loss, as he gave up five earned runs on seven hits, seven walks, and three strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Chris Bennefield pitched the final three and one-third innings and held the Rams scoreless on two hits with two strikeouts.

Barks and Dylan Taylor each had two singles in the game, Barks stole a base, and Taylor was also hit by a pitch. Williams scored twice and drove in two runs, and Walter drew two free passes.

The teams will conclude the 3-game set with a double-header on Saturday at 1 p.m.
