Home Run Barrage Leads No. 10 Baseball to Series Win over No. 17 Texas Wesleyan

Stars Blast Six Dingers In DH Sweep of Rams

OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma City University's Jim Wade Stadium plays as a hitter-friendly ballpark on many days in the spring and early summer, even when the wind is calm. When the wind blows out at more than 20 miles per hour all day, as it di don Saturday afternoon, it is possible to see teams put up huge numbers, and that is exactly what the home standing Stars did on this day.

OCU (14-8, 2-1 SAC) belted five homers in a game one win over Texas Wesleyan (16-11, 3-3 SAC), and in game two, a well-times two run shot from Dalton Reed provided the difference as the Stars completed a double-header sweep of Texas Wesleyan to take the weekend series in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

OCU's Jake Patterson took the baseball for the Stars in game one, and after he worked a clean first inning, it took exactly three pitches for the Stars to give him all the support he needed, Gunner Halter lined a leadoff home run to left center to get the Stars on the board, and later in the inning, teammate Peyton Crispin launched a two-run dinger to push OCU's lead to 4-0.

The Stars eventually plated five runs in the first inning, and they added eight more in the second, with Frederick Walter and Cross Factor each driving in two runs on triples in the inning. Factor added a three run long ball in the third as a part of another five run inning, and he launched his second grand slam of the season in the fourth as the Stars lead ballooned to 23-0 after four innings. John Anthon joined the party with his first home run of the season in the fifth to cap the scoring.

OCU batted around in each of the first four innings, and in those four innings, OCU sent 42 men to the plate, while Texas Wesleyan had only 14 plate appearances in the same span.

Patterson (2-2) had things on cruise control on the mound for OCU. He earned the win as he threw the complete game shutout in 101 pitches, and he scattered four hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts. Jalen Evans (0-2) was touched up for five earned runs on seven hits in only two-thirds of an inning, and he was hit with the loss for Texas Wesleyan.

The Stars had many players shine offensively in the game, but no one shined brighter than Cross Factor. Factor was 3-for-5 with a triple, two home runs, and nine runs batted in for OCU in the game. Anthon was 4-for-6 in the contest with a double, a home run, a run scored and two RBIs; Frederic Walter was 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs, and three RBIs; Noah Barks was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and three RBIs; Crispin was 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs, and three runs scored; and Halter was 2-for-2 with a homer, two walks, and three runs scored.

Texas Wesleyan scored first in the final game of the series, plating a run off OCU starting pitcher Brandon Goldston in the first inning, and after Crispin drove in a run with a ground out in the second inning, the Rams surged in front with a pair of runs in the top of the third to take the lead, 3-1.

Dalton Reed - the only OCU starting position player to not have a base hit in the first game -notched an RBI-single in the bottom of the third to pull OCU to within one at 3-2, and in the fourth, Halter doubled and scored courtesy runner Jared Hazeldine to tie the game at 3-3.

The big hit from Reed, though, came in the fifth frame. Reed took a 1-1 pitch from Jesse Ramirez of Texas Wesleyan and lofted a go-ahead two-run home run to left-center field with nobody out in the inning after Tyler Williams had doubled to start the inning. Reed's round-tripper proved enough for OCU, as Tanner Schoeninger relieved Goldston in the fifth and was dominant.

Schoeninger (3-0) pitched the final three innings of the game, he allowed one hit and two walks in his outing, and he fanned three as he earned his second win of the week. Ramirez (4-1) took his first loss of the season, giving up five runs on nine hits and one walk, and he struck out four for the Rams.

Reed was 3-for-3 in the game, with a double, a homer, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Halter and Williams each also doubled, and Factor singled twice in the game.

OCU will be back in action at home on Tuesday, Mar. 10 when they host the Warriors of Sterling College (Kan.) (11-10) for a single 9-inning game at 3 p.m. at Jim Wade Stadium.
