No. 3 OCU Wins Two More at Cowtown Classic

Stars Take Full Advantage of Opponent Miscues to Move to 5-0

FORT WORTH, Texas - Bright and early on Saturday morning, the third-ranked Oklahoma City University softball team returned to the field for their final two games of the 200 Cowtown Classic, battling their fourth and fifth opponents of the event - all of which came from the state of Kansas. The Stars picked up where they left off on day one of the event, taking advantage of each opportunity and remaining unbeaten on the young season.

OCU (5-0) had to battle from an early deficit against the Ottawa University (Kan.) Braves (1-4) to take an 8-6 win, but the Stars cruised to a 10-1 run-rule victory over the Tabor University (Kan.) Blue Jays (3-1) in their final game of the weekend.

"When you have a team that is as relatively new as this year's team is for us," head coach Phil McSpadden said afterward, "it's good to get out into an event like this and come away with several wins. We saw some good things out of our ball club this weekend, and while we have some things to work on, we were able to get a bunch of new faces some important experience."

Ottawa jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the day's first game. The Braves took advantage of an OCU error to plate three runs in the bottom of the second inning, and they added two more on two hits in the third, but in the top of the fourth, OCU put together a rally to draw even. The Stars got an RBI single from Jaden Shores to get on the board, and the Stars scored four unearned runs in the frame thanks to three Ottawa errors. The last two runs scored on a two-RBI double from Kennedy Jackson that tied the score at 5-5.

Ottawa briefly reclaimed the lead by scoring another unearned run in the bottom of the fourth frame, but in the top of the fifth, Sarah Fisher singled home Brooklyn Mason and Baileigh Loux to give OCU the 7-6 lead. Kaitlyn Jones knocked in Loux with an insurance tally in the top of the seventh, and the Stars held on for the 8-6 win.

Shores (3-0) picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Shelbey Cornelson. Shores threw four innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits and one walk with three strikeouts, and Christie Betker picked up her first save as a Star, working a scoreless seventh frame.

Mason, Fisher, and Jones each singled twice in the game, Fisher had a pair of RBIs, and Loux scored twice. OCU also stole eight bases in the game - two apiece from Loux and Jones, and one each for Mason, Fisher, Taylor Pike, and Nicole Robinson.

In the final game of the weekend, the Stars were given several extra outs in the top of the first inning, and they made the Tabor Blue Jays pay full price for those miscues. OCU scored five unearned runs in the top of the first frame, highlighted by RBI hits from Jones and Mallory McCoy. McCoy tacked on an RBI single in the third inning, Jackson doubled home two in the top of the sixth, and later in the inning Jones added another run scoring single to give OCU their 10-1 margin of victory.

Betker (1-0) earned a win in the circle, tossing five innings and allowing only a solo home run, three hits, and one walk with seven strikeouts. Lexi Duff threw the final inning for OCU, yielding one hit. The loss was charged to Marlee Baxter (1-1) who allowed six runs on six hits in three innings - though only one of the runs she gave up was earned.

Jones had three hits including a double in the game, she scored two runs, and she drove in a pair as well. McCoy singled twice and had two RBIs, and Jackson had a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

OCU is slated to open their home schedule, as well as their Sooner Athletic Conference slate, on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. against Southwestern Christian University (0-2) at Ann Lacy Stadium. The twin bill is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
