No. 3 Softball Sweeps UHV in Waco

Stars Now 7-0, Slated to Open SAC Play Tuesday

WACO, Texas - The Oklahoma City University softball team headed south to the Lone Star State on Friday for a Valentine's Day twin bill with the Jaguars of the University of Houston-Victoria. The teams met at River Bend Park for a double-dip, and OCU took a pair of run-rule victories.

OCU (7-0) pounded out 25 hits in the games, taking six inning wins over UHV (3-4) in both games. The Stars won the first game 12-4, and they completed the sweep with a 9-1 win in the nightcap.

Baileigh Loux and Sarah Fisher each picked up RBI hits in the top of the first inning of game one, and the Stars added two more runs in the second and third innings to build a 6-1 lead. The Jaguars scored in the bottom of the third, and they added two in the bottom of the fifth to claw back to within two at 6-4, but in the sixth, OCU erupted.

The Stars sent 12 batters to the plate, and they tallied six runs on five hits in the frame. Fisher doubled home a pair to give OCU the 8-4 lead, and Jaden Shores and Kaitlyn Jones each added RBIs in the frame, as OCU pushed their lead to 12-4. Shores recorded the final three outs in the bottom half of the frame, and OCU took game one 12-4.

Christie Betker (2-0) earned the win for OCU in the circle, tossing four and a third innings and giving up four runs - only two earned - on four hits, five walks, and three strikeouts. Michelle Kristoff (2-2) took the loss for the Jaguars, as she was tagged for 10 runs on eight hits in five and one third innings. Shores entered with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate in the fifth, but she got out of the jam and worked a scoreless sixth for her second save of the season.

Fisher was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs in the game. Kennedy Jackson and Brooklyn Mason each also had two hits in the game, Jackson scored three runs, Mason scored twice, and Jones knocked in a pair.

In game two, OCU took the field first for the first time this year - batting as the home team in the back half of the day's action.

Fisher picked up an RBI in the bottom of the first inning of the game, knocking in Mason with a ground out, but UHV tied the score in the top of the second.

From there, it was all OCU. The Stars scored the final eight runs in the game, plating two in the bottom of the second, four in the third, and single runs in the fifth and sixth. Mallory McCoy and Jackson each had RBI hits in the second, McCoy cleared the bases with a triple in the third, and in the sixth, Jones picked up a walk-off single in the sixth frame as OCU took the 9-1 win.

Shores (4-0) tossed a complete game and yielded one unearned run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts to earn the win. Kristoff (2-3) took the loss in the second game as well, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits and a walk in two and two-thirds innings.

Jackson, Loux, Fisher, and shores each doubled in the game. Jackson, Loux, Shores and Jones had two hits apiece, but McCoy was the offensive star in game two. She was 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored, and four RBIs.

OCU will open their home schedule on Tuesday afternoon with a headlining matchup at Ann Lacy Stadium. The Stars will host No. 2 USAO (4-2, 0-0 SAC) in their first conference action of 2020, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
