Ace in the Hole: Seagler Keys OCU to 21st Straight Win

Senior Sparks Second Quarter Surge as OCU Overcomes Slow Start vs. SAGU

OKLAHOMA CITY - It isn't often that the Oklahoma City University women's basketball team struggles to score points on their home floor inside Abe Lemons Arena, but on Thursday night -at least early - the Stars did have difficulty putting points on the board.

In times like that, it's nice to be able to turn to a senior leader, and on this night, that senior was Brennyn Seagler

Seagler scored 17 points, and she helped key a 23-6 run to close the first half as top-ranked OCU (21-0, 13-0) rallied from a deficit of as many as nine points early to take the win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (10-10, 5-8 SAC) 82-54. The win lowered OCU's magic number to clinch another Sooner Athletic Conference regular season title to seven.

The Stars struggled on the offensive end in the opening frame. OCU made just four of 13 shots in the opening 10 minutes, and the Stars turned the ball over seven times in the first frame. On the other end, SAGU closed the half on a 7-2 run to take a 16-9 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the teams traded 5-point spurts, leaving the Lady Lions on top 21-14 with 7:32 left in the half.

From there, it was all OCU. The Stars scored 23 of the final 29 points of the first half, led by Seagler who scored nine of her 11 first half points in the second period, and when Seagler yielded to sophomore Abby Selzer, the Stars did not miss a beat. The duo combined for 19 points in the quarter, as OCU used a 28-11 frame to claim a 37-27 halftime lead.

The second half was more of the same for OCU. OCU held SAGU to 10 of 40 shooting in the second half, while in the final 20 minutes, OCU shot the ball at a 51.9-percent (14-for-27) clip. The Stars led 62-39 after three, and they cruised home to the 82-54 win.

Seagler finished with a double-double - her fourth of the season - with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She also added five assists and two steals in the win.

Mallory Lockhart led the Stars with 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting, and Selzer (16) and Erika Ankney (11) also scored in double figures. Selzer and Taylor Sylvester had three blocked shots apiece as well.

OCU made 29 of 56 (51.8%) shots in the game, including six of 12 (50%) from deep. At the foul line, the Stars cashed in 18 of 21 (85.7%) free throws.

OCU will hit the road on Saturday, heading south to Fort Worth, Texas to battle the Texas Wesleyan University Lady Rams (13-7, 8-5 SAC). The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m.
