Second Quarter Surge Leads No. 1 OCU to Win at Texas Wesleyan

Stars now 22-0 After Second Come From Behind Win of the Week

FORT WORTH, Texas - For the second time in three days, the No. 1 Oklahoma City University women's basketball team overcame a slow start to take a Sooner Athletic Conference win. For the second straight game, the Stars used a big second quarter to take command.

OCU (22-0, 14-0 SAC) outscored the Texas Wesleyan University Rams (13-8, 8-6 SAC) 28-7 in the second period, turning a 14-10 deficit into a 38-21 lead on their way to the 73-50 victory.

OCU scored six of the game's first eight points, but over the final five minutes of the opening frame, the Stars went cold. Over the final 5:24 of the opening quarter, OCU went 1-for-12 from the floor, as Texas Wesleyan closed the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 14-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.

That all changed in the second stanza. OCU made 10 of 14 shots in the second quarter, including five of seven 3-point tries, while the Stars held the Rams to 3-for-13 shooting and 1-for-5 from long range in the period. The Stars put together a 17-0 run that spanned 6:24 of game time, and the Stars took a 38-21 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The third and fourth quarters were much closer, but the Stars were simply keeping Texas Wesleyan from making any significant headway into an already sizeable lead. The Rams never got closer than 11 points, and the OCU lead swelled to as many as 29 twice in the fourth frame, as OCU cruised home with the 73-50 win to complete their fourth season series sweep of the SAC schedule.

Mallory Lockhart led the Stars with 19 points in the game, as she connected on five of 12 attempts from beyond the arc. Abby Selzer had 17 points and seven rebounds in only 15 minutes, and she made six of 11 shots from the field, and Brennyn Seagler chipped in 10 points and eight boards. NaShyla Hammons led OCU with nine rebounds in the game, and Taylor Sylvester had team highs in assists (4) and blocked shots (3).

As a team, OCU cashed in 27 of 61 (44.3%) shots in the game, including eight of 21 (38.1%) 3-pointers. At the foul line, OCU was 11-for-12 (91.7%). OCU held a commanding 45-30 advantage on the glass.

The Stars will return to the Sooner State and head across to Bethany, Okla. on Tuesday night to continue their pursuit of another SAC title. OCU will take on the Lady Eagles of Southwestern Christian University (16-6, 8-6 SAC) at Pickens-Springer Gymnasium at 6 p.m.
