Stars take 102-90 loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God

Southwestern Assemblies of God halts OCU's winning streak

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell short to Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 102-90 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena.
Eddie Smith supplied OCU with 18 points. The Stars went to 12-10, 5-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Southwestern Assemblies, ranked 15th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 18-3, 10-3 in the SAC.
Smith, a freshman from Birmingham, Ala., notched season highs in scoring and 3-pointers (four). Rashaun Coleman, a junior from Houston, totaled 17 points and six assists, and Anthony Davis, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, produced 17 points and nine rebounds for OCU.
A.J. Cockrell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., tallied his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Trae Bryant, a senior from Wilmington, N.C., supplied the Stars with 12 points and five assists.
Smith canned a 3-pointer to give OCU its largest lead of the night 39-31 with 2:37 remaining in the first half.
The Stars reeled off a 7-0 run to break a 25-25 deadlock in the first half. Darrion Willies drilled a corner trey to ignite the OCU surge. Cockrell hit a free throw to put the Stars ahead 32-25 with 6:29 left in the first.
Southwestern Assemblies of God responded by scoring the first six points of the second period. Kentton Williams scored each of those points, hitting four free throws along with a bucket.
Coleman's lay-in tied the game 72-72 midway through the second half, but Williams and Nykolas Mason downed foul shots to put Southwestern Assemblies of God in front.
The Stars meet 20th-ranked Texas Wesleyan at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas.
