Men's Hoops Eases By Panhandle State, Earns No. 7 Seed in SAC Championship

Stars Will Play Quarterfinal Round at No. 2 Seed JBU

GOODWELL, Okla. - The Oklahoma City University men's basketball team entered the regular season finale with Oklahoma Panhandle State University knowing they needed a win and help to secure a berth in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament. Senior Trae Bryant did everything he could to ensure the Stars did their part, and when the day was over, the other games had fallen OCU's way as well, and the Stars danced their way into the postseason.

OCU (15-15, 7-13 SAC) used a 10-3 run out of the gate to take control early, and they never looked back as Bryant poured in 26 points to help the Stars to a 100-80 win over OPSU (5-24, 0-20 SAC). The Langston University Lions lost at home to Mid-America Christian University, and Southwestern Christian University fell at Wayland Baptist University as well, which helped the Stars climb to the No. 7 spot in the final SAC standings.

OCU Bryant and Anthony Davis combined for the first 13 OCU points in the game, and when Bryant connected from long distance with 16:00 to play in the first half, OCU held a seven point lead, 13-6. The OCU lead quickly ballooned to 16 points on a trey from Kealon Claybourne with 12:59 to go in the opening stanza, and the Stars led by as many as 18 points in the period before OCU settled for a 49-35 halftime lead.

OPSU cut the lead to nine at 63-54 with 13:01 to play in the game, but the Stars answered with an 11-0 run to push their lead to 74-54 with just more than 10 minutes to play in the contest. Davis buried a triple with 8:10 left on the clock, and Claybourne knocked another one in with with 6:49 to go to push the lead to 27 at 88-61. The lead reached as many as 29 points when Bryant connected from deep with 3:04 remaining, and OCU cruised in with the 20-point win, 100-80.

Bryant's 26 points led the Stars, and he made 10 of 16 shots including six of 11 from long distance in the game. Claybourne added 21 tallies on 7-for-10 shooting, Davis chipped in 16, and Rashaun Coleman posted his second straight double-double with 15 points and 12 assists. Bryant was also the OCU team leader with seven rebounds.

OCU made 38 of 64 (59.4%) shots from the field, 16 of 34 (47.1%) from beyond the arc, and they were 8-for-9 (88.9%) from the foul line. 

The Stars will hit the road for the SAC quarterfinal round and head to Siloam Springs, Ark. where they will battle the No. 2 seeded and NAIA No. 9 John Brown University Golden Eagles (26-4). The game will be at JBU's Bill George Arena and will tip at 7 p.m.
