Stars suffer first loss this season 65-50 to Wayland Baptist

No. 1-ranked OCU had been final undefeated team in NAIA

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University fell from the ranks of the unbeaten 65-50 to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday night at the Hutcherson Center in a clash of teams ranked in the top five of NAIA women's basketball.
Oklahoma City and Wayland Baptist stand tied atop the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I, went to 27-1, 18-1 in conference play, while fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist moved to 27-2, 18-1 in the SAC.
The Stars conclude the regular season 2 p.m. Saturday against Panhandle State in Goodwell, Okla., while Wayland Baptist meets Southwestern Christian at 2 p.m. Saturday in Plainview, Texas. OCU remains in position to gain the No. 1 seed in the SAC Tournament due to having a better record against NAIA competition (27-1) than Wayland Baptist (25-2).  
OCU's best undefeated start to a season since 2002-03 came to a close at 27-0. OCU turned in a 34-0 mark before falling short in the 2003 national championship game 71-70 to Southern Nazarene. The Stars' setback left five undefeated teams in women's college basketball this season. OCU was the last unbeaten team in the NAIA.
Wayland Baptist reeled off a 10-0 run from late in the first quarter into the second period. Jenna Cooper and Kambrey Blakey nailed back-to-back treys to ignite the Flying Queens' surge. Kelea Pool's bucket put Wayland Baptist ahead 21-9 at the 8:27 mark of the second.
OCU outscored Wayland Baptist 13-9 in the third quarter. Shamika Smith sank a free throw to slice the Stars' deficit to 36-34 with 1:58 left in the third.
Abby Selzer hit a jumper to reduce Wayland Baptist's edge to 38-36 early in the fourth. The Flying Queens answered with an 8-0 run as Cooper downed three free throws. Blakey nailed a 3 to put Wayland Baptist on top 46-36 with 7:57 left.
The Stars mustered 50 points and shot 35.7 percent from the field, both season lows.
Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., propelled OCU with 14 points and seven rebounds, while NaShyla Hammons, a senior from Oklahoma City, posted 11 points and three rebounds. The Stars' Brennyn Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, added nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Kaylee Edgemon spearheaded Wayland Baptist with 15 points and six rebounds.
