OCU dismantles Panhandle State 76-49

No. 1-ranked Stars take fourth straight SAC regular-season championship

GOODWELL, Okla. – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University wrapped up its fourth consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference women's basketball regular-season title in a 76-49 romp over Panhandle State on Saturday at the Anchor D Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, completed the regular season 28-1, 19-1 in the SAC. Oklahoma City faces Langston at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU collected its 20th SAC regular-season crown. The Stars have won or shared 10 of the last 11 conference championships. OCU improved to 239-23 with a .912 winning percentage in league play since 2007-08. OCU and fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) were SAC co-champions in 2019-20.
Abby Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., led the way for the Stars with 15 points and six rebounds, shooting 6-for-7 from the field. OCU's Mallory Lockhart produced 12 points while nailing 4-for-8 from 3-point range.
Lockhart, a sophomore from Keller, Texas, set the OCU single-season record for 3-pointers with a trey to give the Stars a 29-16 advantage with 4:56 left in the second quarter. Lockhart increased her season total to 110 3-pointers to surpass Kesha Watson's previous mark of 106 established in 2003-04. Lockhart tops NAIA Division I in treys this season.
Erika Ankney, a sophomore from Harrah, Okla., supplied OCU with 12 points and three assists, while Brennyn Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, pitched in 10 points and eight rebounds. Taylor Sylvester, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., also grabbed eight rebounds while adding four points, three assists and five blocked shots.
Shamika Smith sparked OCU in erasing a 14-11 first-period deficit. Smith had two free throws plus swiped a steal, then coasted for a lay-in to put the Stars ahead 15-14. Selzer made it six unanswered points for OCU by sinking a pair of foul shots.
Lockhart's record-setting 3 capped a 12-0 Oklahoma City charge. Selzer ignited the run with a 3-point play late in the first quarter.
OCU shot 57.1 percent from the field in the first half.
