Late Surge Leads OCU past Bacone in Series Opener

No. 10 Stars Use Big Innings Late to Trounce Bacone

MUSKOGEE, Okla. - The No. 10 Oklahoma City University baseball team hit the road on Thursday to open a weekend series in non-conference action at Bacone College. The Stars and Warriors were slated for a single game on Thursday, and with the weather warming, the OCU bats came to life late to lead the Stars to victory.

OCU (9-7) used a 7-run sixth inning to break a scoreless deadlock, and they added three more in the seventh to take a run rule win over the Warriors (1-15), 10-0 in seven innings.

The Stars put a pair of runners on base with two away in the second inning, but a fielder's choice grounder ended the threat, and Bacone put two on with one out in the third before OCU starting pitcher Jake Patterson got out of the jam. From there into the sixth, the game was a pitchers' duel as Patterson and Kalil Lewis matched each other pitch for pitch, frustrating the offenses of both clubs.

In the top of the sixth, though, the top of the OCU order broke things open. Gunner Halter walked to lead off, and Cross Factor was hit by a pitch to put two on with none out. Halter moved up to third on a fly out, and Factor followed with a stolen base, setting up Dalton Reed for a two-run double to put OCU on the board. Noah Barks walked, he and Reed moved up on a wild pitch, and Frederic Walter walked to load the bases. Peyton Crispin lofted a sacrifice fly, and Bryson Lierle singled to double OCU's lead. Halter picked up an RBI on a second walk in the inning two batters later, and Factor followed with a two-RBI double to cap the 7-run frame.

Reed led off the seventh with a solo home run, and Walter hit a two-run shot later in the inning, as OCU tallied three runs in the seventh to push the Stars' lead to 10-0, and that was enough to end the game early.

Patterson (1-2) got the win, throwing six shutout innings, and he gave up six hits without a walk while he struck out seven. Tanner Sparks threw the seventh frame, notching a pair of strikeouts. Lewis (1-4) was tagged for seven earned runs on only four hits in five and two-thirds innings. He walked four and hit three batters as well.

Reed and Walter each had two hits in the game, including a homer, and they along with Factor each had multiple RBIs in the game.

The teams will wrap up the series with a double-header at OCU's Jim Wade Stadium on Saturday afternoon. First pitch of the day is slated for 1 p.m.
