Baseball Completes Sweep of Bacone with Two Lopsided Wins

Stars Rap out 23 Hits, Plate 26 runs in Sweep of Warriors

OKLAHOMA CITY - With the wind blowing out at a steady pace all day at Jim Wade Stadium, the already potent offense of the No. 10 Oklahoma City University Stars baseball team was made even more dangerous. When the dust had settled in the twilight after the day's play, OCU had taken full advantage of the conditions to grab a pair of comfortable wins.

OCU (11-7) won their third and fourth straight ball games, completing a sweep of Bacone College (1-17) in a split weekend series with wins of 8-0 and 18-10 on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon for baseball.

OCU got things going in the bottom of the first inning of game one when Noah Barks lofted a fly ball to left field that got lost in the bright sky at the ballpark and landed for a two-RBI double, and he later scored on a wild pitch as the Stars grabbed an early 3-0 lead. He picked up another RBI on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the second, and in the third, Cross Factor, Tyler Williams, and Dalton Reed each drove in runs to push OCU's lead to 8-0.

That was more than enough for the OCU pitching staff. Aaron McGeorge, Bryson Lierle, and Gunner Halter combined on a 5-hit shutout of Bacone, and the trio did not walk a batter in the game. McGeorge (3-0) earned the win by tossing four innings and giving up four hits while fanning four Warriors, Lierle worked two perfect innings with three strikeouts, and Halter threw the seventh allowing one hit and whiffing three.

The loss went to Bacone's starter Cristian Filpo (0-4) who lasted only one inning and allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Halter and Frederic Walter had the only multi-hit games for OCU in game one, as each singled twice in the game. Reed and Barks each had doubles, Factor and Williams scored twice each, and Barks drove in three runs.

OCU again started quickly at the plate in game two. Williams belted a two-run homer in the first frame, Seth Jones doubled in the second and Lierle scored on a throwing error on that play, and Halter followed with a two-run dinger that put OCU up 5-0 after two complete innings.

Bacone tallied their first run of the series in the third, and they added three more in the fourth before OCU starter Brandon Goldston was able to escape with the lead intact, and over the final three innings, the game was a run-scoring bonanza. Pinch runner Dillon Goddard scored for OCU on a wild pitch in the fourth frame, and OCU scored six times in both the fifth and sixth innings. In those two frames, OCU homered a total of three times, which included a 3-run moon shot from Williams for his 10th round-tripper of the season and a grand slam from Factor. Dalton Reed had the third homer - a two run blast to center field.

Bacone managed six runs off the stars bullpen in the game as well, but OCU was able to hold off any further drama and take the win 18-10.

Goldston (3-2) earned the win while he allowed four earned runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts in four innings of work. The loss went to Colton Scott (0-4) of Bacone who went four and one-third and was touched up for 11 earned runs on 10 hits and five walks.

Factor was 4-for-5 in game two, and he finished a triple shy of the cycle with three runs scored and six RBIs. Williams homered twice in three at bats and knocked in five, Peyton Crispin was 2-for-4 with a double and a homer, and Lierle singled, walked twice, and scored two runs.

The weekend sweep for OCU also saw head coach Denney Crabaugh move into fourth on the all-time NAIA wins list. He now has 1,510 career wins, which moves him past Larry Hays of Lubbock Christian (Texas) who had 1,508 career wins. He now trails only Cumberland (Tenn.) University's Woody Hunt (1,544), Ed Cheff of Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) (1,705), and Gordie Gillespie of St. Francis (Ill.), Ripon, and Lewis who racked up 1,893 wins in 59 years of coaching. Crabaugh is in his 32nd season at OCU, the fewest seasons coached of any coach in the top-5 on the NAIA list.

OCU will be back in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon when they head to northeastern Oklahoma to take on the No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan University Eagles (12-11) in Bartlesville, Okla. First pitch of the single game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
