OCU clips USAO 64-62

Top-ranked Stars win by slimmest margin of 2019-20

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City University held onto a 64-62 victory over USAO on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Mallory Lockhart, a sophomore from Keller, Texas, equaled Oklahoma City's single-season record for 3-pointers. The Stars, top-ranked in NAIA Division I women's basketball, remained unbeaten with a 27-0 record, 18-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Lockhart sank two treys Saturday to give her 106 3-pointers, which equals the number of 3s Kesha Watson hit in 2003-04 to establish the mark. Lockhart drained a trey to score the first points of the second quarter with 9:18 left and tie the record. Lockhart buried 105 3-pointers as a freshman.
Brennyn Seagler served as OCU's ring leader Saturday with 16 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Seagler, a senior from Gruver, Texas, shot 6-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-5 from 3-point land. Taylor Sylvester, a senior from Chickasha, Okla., posted 12 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Stars.
Abby Selzer, a sophomore from Thomas, Okla., provided OCU with 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots, while Erika Ankney, a sophomore from Harrah, Okla., contributed 10 points and four assists.
USAO scored the game's final nine points, but fell short of seizing victory. Milagros Carrera hit two treys, while Reyna Ammons added a 3 to spark USAO. Carrera sank a jumper in the lane to cut OCU's lead to two points with seven seconds showing. Seagler rejected USAO's last shot attempt from the corner as the buzzer sounded.
In the first quarter, USAO built a 21-10 advantage as Carrera nailed back-to-back 3s. The Stars rallied by scoring six unanswered points. Selzer scored on a transition bucket to slice the USAO edge down to 21-16 with 33 seconds left in the first.
In the second, OCU unleashed a 10-0 surge to gain the lead. Seagler and Erika Ankney combined for back-to-back-to-back treys. Seagler downed a 3 from the wing off Ankney's feed to put the Stars ahead 32-30 at the 4:48 mark of the second period. Ankney nailed a 3-pointer off Sylvester's kick-out pass to cap the run with 3:06 remaining in the quarter.
Seagler's basket with 7:56 left in the game gave OCU its largest advantage of 56-43.
The Stars square off with fifth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 6 p.m. Thursday in Plainview, Texas.
