Softball Settles for Split with CMU, Avila

Stars Earn Run-Rule Win in Night Cap

OKLAHOMA CITY - Saturday was a long day for the Oklahoma City University softball team. The third-ranked Stars played the first and third games oa a three team triple header at Ann Lacy Stadium, ending the day on a high note after a rough start to the day.

The Stars (8-3) dropped their opening game of the day to the Central Methodist University Eagles (2-4) 9-8 in a 10-inning marathon, but they bounced back for an 8-0 run rule win over Avila University (3-3) in the final game of the day.

OCU fell behind early in game one as the Eagles of CMU plated a pair of runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the frame, OCU got one of those runs back on a well executed double steal that cut the deficit to 2-1, and the Stars took the lead in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded, Brooklyn Mason singled up the middle and picked up two RBIs, then as she moved up to second on the throw, a third run scored when Baleigh Loux came home to score on an error to push OCU's lead to 4-2.

Sarah Fisher singled home a pair in the fourth to extend OCU's lead to 6-2, and the teams traded two runs each in the fifth inning, sending the game to the sixth with OCU on top 8-4.

Central Methodist clawed a run closer in the sixth, but OCU carried an 8-5 lead to the seventh looking for the win. The Eagles, though, had other ideas, tying the game with three runs - all of which scored with two outs in the inning. The Eagles threatened to end the game in the eighth when they loaded the bases with none out, but OCU's Jaden Shores got a strikeout and a double play on a fly out to left and a great throw from Fisher to cut down a runner at the plate that preserved the tie.

The game proceeded into the 10th still tied at eight, but an unearned run from CMU with two outs gave the Eagles the lead, and OCU went quietly in the bottom half of the frame to give CMU the 9-8 win.

Madison Love (1-1) earned the win for CMU, and the loss went to OCU's Christie Betker (2-2).

Fisher and Mason were each 2-for-5 in the game with a run scored and two RBIs. Fisher added a double and a stolen base, while Mason swiped two bags. Kennedy Jackson was 3-for-5 in the contest with two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored.

Shores (5-1) took the ball for game two, and she cruised through her four inning stint. The senior hurler allowed only one hit in five innings, a single to lead off the fourth which was erased on an inning ending 6-3 double play. She faced the minimum in the game and struck out six in the win.

Her night was made a little easier by her offense early in the game. Fisher doubled in Jackson to open the scoring, and Loux followed with a homer to put OCU up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. OCU added an unearned run before the inning was over, and in the third, Fisher and Jackson each drove in runs to push the Stars' lead to 6-0. Lexi Duff smashed an RBI double on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the fourth, and Fisher ended the game with an RBI base hit in the sixth that capped the scoring.

Madison McKinney (1-2) took the loss for Avila, allowing eight runson 17 hits in five and two-thirds innings.

Jackson and Fisher each had three hit games for OCU in the night cap, and Loux and Kaitlyn Jones each had a pair of knocks. Each of the Stars' batters who had an at bat in the game had at least one hit, eight different Stars scored runs, and Fisher and Loux had multiple-RBI contests.

OCU is slated to resume Sooner Athletic Conference play when they next return to the field. The Stars will head to Goodwell, Okla. on Monday, Feb. 24 for a double-header against Oklahoma Panhandle State University (5-9, 0-0 SAC) at 1 p.m.
