Softball Wins in Extras at OPSU, Game Two Suspended

Stars Take Game 1, Dramatic Westher Change Forces Suspension of Game 2

GOODWELL, Okla. - When the day began at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, it was a beautiful day for a twin bill between the Aggies and the No. 3 Oklahoma city University Stars. By the end of the day, OCU had to settle for one win as the bottom fell out of the westher just shy of the second game becoming official.

OCU (9-3, 1-2 SAC) plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning after a late rally from the Aggies (5-10, 0-1 SAC) tied things up, and the Stars took game one of the double-dip 10-7. OCU got off to a good start in game two, taking an early 2-0 lead, but with Sarah Fisher at the plate in the top of the fifth, weather rolled in with high winds and precipitation that forced the suspension of the day's activities.

Baileigh Loux picked up an RBI on a squeeze bunt in the top of the first inning of game one, and later in the inning she and Kaitlyn Jones executed a double steal that stretched the OCU lead to 2-0.

OPSU tallied three unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning, but OCU immediately reclaimed the advantage on a two-RBI single from Brooklyn Mason with two outs in the top of the third.

The score remained 4-3 OCU into the top of the sixth when OCU appeared to take control. Lexi Duff led off the inning with a single, Mallory McCoy sacrificed pinch runner Taylor Pike to second, and Kelsie Delap and Kennedy Jackson reached on a walk and a bunt single to load the bases. Jones followed with a bases-clearing triple to give OCU the 7-3 lead, but OPSU answered immediately.

The Aggies plated three runs to close the gap to one after six innings, aided by an error and two walks. The Stars went to the bullpen for Christie Betker in relief of starting pitcher Shelbey Cornelson. Betker was able to stop the rally after allowing two inherited runners to score, and after OCU went scoreless in the top of the seventh, she went back out to try and pick up the save in the seventh.

OPSU tied the game on a one-out RBI double, and after an error put two on with only one out, the Aggies appeared to win the game, but OCU got a reprieve. With Jaden Shores now in the game to pitch, Naley Neal dropped a bunt down the first base line, and the throw to first went into right field, apparently allowing the winning run to score. On the play, however, Neal was called out for interfering with the throw to first by running outside the runner's lane, which resulted in not only Neal being ruled out, but in the runners being returned to first and second, and Shores was able to escape the jam.

In the eighth, with the international tiebreaker in effect, McCoy began the frame at second base, and after she moved up to third on a sacrifice, Jones singled her home to give OCU the 8-7 lead. Fisher and Shores added RBI singles in the inning as the Stars extended their lead to 10-7, and Shores retired the only two batters she faced in the eighth, and Loux picked off Caitley Adams at second, who was then caught stealing third by the combination of Jackson and Nicole Robinson to end the game in a 10-7 OCU win.

Shores (6-1) earned the win in relief, throwing an inning and two thirds of hitless, scoreless relief, and Kaylor Battiest (4-5) went the distance for OPSU in the loss, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Jackson was 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the game, and she also stole two bases. Jones had a single and a triple in five at bats, she scored twice, drove in four runs, and she swiped three bags, Loux had a single and a double in three at bats with an RBI, and she was hit by a pitch as well.

OCU racked up nine stolen bases in the game as a team, with Loux, Fisher, Shores, and Mason each swiping a cushion as well.

Game two got under way under overcast skies with the temperatures holding, and OCU got off to a quick start. Jackson put down a bunt single to start the game, she stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice from Jones. Fisher then stepped in and put down a bunt single herself that scored Jackson to give OCU the 1-0 lead. Jones reached on an error in the third, she moved up to second on a passed ball, and after she advanced to third on a groundout, she scored on a wild pitch to give OCU the 2-0 lead.

Shores was cruising in the circle for OCU early, despite allowing the first three batters of the game to reach base. She struck out the final two hitters she faced in the first, and in between the strikeouts, Loux and Robinson combined on a back-pick play to retire Abby Gregory at third and help the Stars escape the jam. Over the next three innings, Shores allowed only two base runners - each reaching on a two-out walk - and she picked up a pair of strikeouts and retired five hitters on ground balls.

Jackson reached on a single and moved to second on a throwing error to lead off the top of the fifth, and after Jones flied out, Fisher stepped in as the winds picked up. With the wide open spaces of the Oklahoma prairies providing no cover, the winds howled across from left to right at OPSU, and after Fisher worked a 3-1 count, the coaches and umpires got together and suspended the game, knowing the weather was supposed to get wet when the front arrived.

The game will resume prior to the teams' scheduled twin bill at Ann Lacy Stadium on April 17.

OCU will resume their season on Friday when they head to Bartlesville, Okla. for a non-conference twin bill against Oklahoma Wesleyan University (2-7). The games are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
