Top-ranked Stars Cruise to 26th Straight win

OCU Overwhelms MACU in Dominant Performance

OKLAHOMA CITY - In basketball, when a team possesses a significant advantage on paper, they typically work to exploit that advantage as much as possible, and on Thursday night, that is what played out at the Gaulke Activity Center in southwestern Oklahoma City.

The undefeated and top-ranked Oklahoma City University Stars women's basketball team (26-0, 17-0 SAC) got off to a great start on Thursday night at Mid-America Christian University (18-9, 10-7 SAC), and the front line of the Stars controlled play all night as OCU cruised to the 88-51 victory.

"We really got off to a good start tonight," said head coach Bo Overton after the game. "Every time we come here, we know that they are a team that can really shoot the ball, so it's really important to get off to a great start, and I thought we did that tonight."

The Stars did do exactly that in the first 10 minutes of play. OCU held MACU to 2-for-17 shooting in the opening frame, and on the other end, the Stars made half of their 18 field goal attempts in the quarter. MACU actually took the early 5-2 lead, but over the final seven minutes of the frame, OCU absolutely dominated. Mallory Lockhart hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at five with 6:44 to go in the period, and that ignited an 18-2 OCU run that spanned the duration of the frame. Brennyn Seagler scored five of those 18 points, and Abby Selzer added eight in the period, and after one, OCU led 20-7.

MACU managed to get their offense rolling in the second quarter, but they were unable to slow OCU, led by the tandem of Selzer and Seagler. Seagler began distributing the ball with regularity, and Selzer continued to have her way in the paint, and at the half, OCU held the lead 45-27.

The story in the second half was the pursuit of a triple double from Seagler. She ended up finishing the night one assist and one rebound shy of a triple-double, which would have been the first from an OCU player since 2003. Still, the Stars continued to control the paint, where they finished the game with a 42-16 advantage as Selzer and Taylor Sylvester each finished with double doubles, and OCU cruised to the 88-51 win.

Selzer led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, and Sylvester added 12 points and 10 boards. Seagler scored 16 points, Erika Ankney added 14, and Lockhart chipped in 13. Sylvester also narrowly missed a triple-double finishing the game with seven blocked shots.

OCU made 36 of 60 (60%) shots in the game, including 10 of 19 (52.6%) from beyond the arc. At the foul line, OCU was 6-for-10 (60%).

The Stars will wrap up their regular season home slate on Saturday afternoon when they host the Drovers of the University of Science & Arts (18-8, 12-5 SAC). The Stars will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when Shamika Smith, NaShyla Hammons, Sylvester, and Seagler will play their final regular season home game. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
